Allen Clark

Allen Cecil Clark, 62 of Lenoir, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.

Born November 29, 1950 in Caldwell County, he was the son of the late Aldred Edmond Clark and Mary Cook Clark. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Allena Michelle Clark.

Mr. Clark was a United States Navy Veteran during the Vietnam War. He was a Sponsor for Children’s International, and member of IT Carolina Professional Group, and member of Bethlehem Church of God.

He is survived by a son, Christopher Allen Clark of Hudson; and one brother, Aldred Clark Jr. of Lenoir; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013, 4 p.m. at Bethlehem Church of God with Reverend Stewart Langston officiating.

David Sutherland

David Alan Sutherland, 65, of Granite Falls, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston Salem.

 

The family will receive friends Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.  Burial will be in Millbrook, NY at a later date.

 

Mary Bumgarner

Mary Coffey Bumgarner, 81, of Hudson, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Gateway Nursing Center.

 

Mrs. Bumgarner was born in Avery County to the late Grover Coffey and Cora Gragg Coffey.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Baine Hartley and her second husband Harold Bumgarner; a son Keith Hartley; a grandson Chris Hartley; a great grandson Keaggen Hartley; her brothers and sisters.

 

Survivors include her sons, Tim Hartley and wife Lisa of Morganton and Reverend Terry Hartley and wife Regina of Boone; a daughter, Zandy Hartley of Lake Tahoe, CA; her grandchildren, Jennifer Fulenwider, Ryan Hartley, Ashley Hartley, Samantha Hartley, Aleisha Hartley, Steven Midkiff and Eric Midkiff and seven great grandchildren.

 

A funeral service will be held Monday, April 8, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Poovey’s Chapel Baptist Church with Reverend Nicky Waters officiating.  Burial will follow in the church cemetery.  The family will receive friends Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Charlsie Shoemaker

Charlsie L. Shoemaker, age 77, of Charles Melton Lane, Lenoir, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. She was born May 15, 1935 in Caldwell County to the late Charles and Edith Melton.  She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Annette Shoemaker.

Mrs. Shoemaker was a loving wife, mother, sister, friend and a wonderful grandmother. She was a furniture worker seamstress for 32 years at Broyhill Furniture. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she loved taking care of the children in the nursery.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene Shoemaker of the home; daughter, Gina Ritch of the home; son, Mikeal Shoemaker and wife Susie of Lenoir; sister, Sybil Greene and husband Richard of Lenoir; grandchildren, Joe Ritch, Rebekah Moss, Matt Shoemaker, Michelle Shoemaker and Amanda Ellis; and  great-grandchildren, Ashley Moss, Danielle Moss, Kirstin Ellis, Zachary Ellis and Alexis Shoemaker.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Rev. Jackie Taylor and Rev. Lynn Hawkins. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Joe Ritch, Bud Kincaid, Keith Murphy, Danny Murphy, Chris Greene, Jonathan Greene and Wayne Ellis.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Matt Shoemaker and Zachary Ellis.

John Whittington

John Allen Whittington, age 54, of Lenoir, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013.The family will receive friends Friday, April 5, 2013 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Collettsville Ruritan Building.  Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

 

Joseph Schnoblen

Joseph Lawrence Schnoblen, 73 passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. Arrangements are incomplete at this time at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.

 

 Adrena Sigler

Adrena Gaye Sigler, age 61, of Granite Falls, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013. Services will be held at a later date in West Virginia. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

 

Margaret Benfield

Margaret Bradshaw Benfield, age 86, of Hudson, died Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. She was born November 21, 1926 in Caldwell County to the late Rev. Masten Bradshaw and Effie Elrod Bradshaw. Margaret was the youngest and last surviving of eleven children.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H.S. Benfield, Jr.; six sisters, Christine Bradshaw, Ola Cloer, Ruby Crump, Lona Belle Clark, Anna Griffin and Charlotte Statin and four brothers, Stewart, Lonnie, Edgar and Rodney Bradshaw.

Mrs. Benfield began her professional career with Broyhill Furniture, Inc. working in the Main Office for thirteen years. From there she worked as secretary for First Baptist Church of Hudson retiring in 1991 with 32 years of service. After retirement she worked part time at Blue Ridge Baptist Church, Hudson and also at Philadelphia Lutheran Church, Granite Falls.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Hudson conducted by Dr. Wade Dellinger. The body will be placed in the church thirty minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow at Sardis Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Jeff Bradshaw, Brian Clark, Barry Cloer, Masten Cloer, Terrell Adkins and Rusty Reid.

The family would like to express their gratitude to Gateway Rehabilitation and Nursing Care for their kindness and care shown to Margaret during her stay.
