Colene Holman

Colene Hood Holman, 84, of Hudson passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at Gateway Nursing Center in Lenoir. She was born Jan. 5, 1930, daughter of the late Horace Hood and Ida Collin Hood. She was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her loving husband, John Thomas Holman, and a brother, Gwyn “Babe” Hood.

She is survived by her son, James Holman and wife Barbara of Hudson; a grandson, Curtis Holman and wife Amanda of Taylorsville; a granddaughter, Jessica Holman and J.B. Hatton of Granite Falls; a great-grandson, J.D. Holman of Taylorsville; a great granddaughter, Kassidy Hatton of Granite Falls; and a brother, Earl Hood of Granite Falls.

The family will receive friends Thursday, June 19, 2014, from 1 till 2 p.m. at Mackie Funeral Home in Granite Falls, the service will follow in the Chapel at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Janet Chester officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir. Pallbearers will be Curtis Holman, J.B. Hatton, Randy Lowman, Keith Chester, Gary Mann and Charles Hood.

Tressie Setzer

Tressie E. Richey Setzer, 74, of Taylorsville passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014. She was born in Alexander County on May 14, 1940, to the late Arthur Ray Richey and Floy Belle Benfield Richey. Tressie was retired from Socks And Things in Hickory and she was a very active member of Union Baptist Church in Lenoir.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Charles "Charlie" Setzer of the home; daughters, Regina Church (Robert) of Taylorsville, Patricia Grant (Tim) of Lenoir, and Beverly Winkler (Kelly) of Hudson; grandchildren, Lea Church of Taylorsville, Jenna Bumgarner, Marie Saunders, Tristan Saunders of Lenoir, Evan Bumgarner, Ricky Grant, Amanda Grant of Raleigh, Jared Winkler and Jeremy Winkler of Hudson; siblings, Ollie Belle Austin, Betty Bowman (Donald Lee), Claude Richey (Lorene), Katherine Davidson (Ronald), Glenn Ritchie (Vickie), Johnny Ritchie (Melissa), Harvey Ritchie (Nancy) all of Taylorsville, and Peggy Hollar (Melvin) of Hickory; and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 19, 2014, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Union Baptist Church in Lenoir. The service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Myron Davis and the Rev. Luke Brakefield officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers include Mark Bowman, Richard Bowman, Kelly Ray Ritchie, Tim Austin, Shawn Reed, Jamie Davidson, and Michael Davidson. Mae Carroll

Mae D. Carroll, 87, of Bluffton, South Carolina, formerly of Lenoir, died Sunday, June 15, 2014, at her residence. She was born Nov. 5, 1926, in Caldwell County to the late Lum and Blanche Story Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Opal Green, Jean Eller and Shirley Green; one brother, Bascom Story; and one granddaughter, Lyndsey Smith.

Mrs. Carroll was retired from Broyhill Furniture Industries and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Robert L. Carroll of the home; three sons, Robert L. Carroll Jr. and Albert Clay, both of Hilton Head, S.C., and Thomas Clay of Newport News, Va.; two daughters, Joyce C. Smith and husband Marcus of Macon, Ga., and Debra L. Carroll of Hilton Head, S.C.; one brother, Wayne Davis of Lenoir; three sisters, Carolyn D. Waters of Dallas, Texas, Rebecca D. Vann of Rocky Mount and Ruby D. Elder of Lenoir; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Friday, June 20, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Park conducted by the Rev. Benny Greene.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Melvin Gray

Melvin Jennings Gray, 83, of Granite Falls passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

Mr. Gray was born in Lenoir County to the late Jessie James Gray and Ester Melvin Gray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Louise Cannon Gray; a brother, Warren Gray; and sisters, Cathrine Vinson and Harriett Braswell. He was retired from Sherrill’s Furniture and a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Jeff Gray and wife Meldonna of Claremont, and Teddy Gray of the home; his daughter, Jennifer Moore and husband Keith of Lenoir; his grandchildren, Erica Moore and fiancé Matthew Tucker of Cullman, Alabama, Kendele Moore of Apex, Alex and Matt Gray of Claremont, and Sonya Townsend of Hickory; great-grandchildren, Beth Shaw and Michael Ward; a great-great-grandchild; brothers, Donald Gray of Granite Falls and Milton Gray of New Jersey; and a sister, Marion Hinson of Goldsboro.

A graveside service will be held Friday, June 20, 2014, at 4 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Glenn Walker officiating.

Military Honors provided by the United States Navy and Caldwell County Honor Guard.

Family will hold open hours at the home of Keith and Jennifer Moore at 1345 Cottage Grove Road, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Serving as pallbearers will be Teddy Gray, Jeff Gray, Matt Gray, Alex Gray, Donald Gray and Ronald Gray.

Elsie Harper

Elsie Elizabeth Harper, 87, of Willow Street, Lenoir, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. She was born May 10, 1927, in Caldwell County to the late Lottie Harper and “Humpy Pee Wee.” In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Willow I. Harper; and a niece, Lottie Harper Ferguson “Bo Peep.”

Ms. Harper was a member of Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church, where she was a member of “Seniors of Today.” She was a retired employee of First United Methodist Church in the Nursery Department.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth Cameron Harper of Lenoir; daughters, Elizabeth Lynn Harper of the home and Carla E. Harper of Lenoir; sister, Alma Taylor of Philadelphia; nephew, David Harper; grandchildren, Shaterrica Harper, Shania Harper, Shantel Harper, Kennedi Harper, Shadin Harper, Zion Norwood; great-grandchild, Sharrod Harper; and a host of great-nephews, -nieces, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. James Perkins, the Rev. Jimmie Norwood and the Rev. Eugenia Harrell. Interment will follow at Belleview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Serving as pallbearers will be Everett Logan, Randy Scott, James Kincaid, Tim Frazier, Alexander Ferguson Jr. and Rayford Norwood.

Honorary pallbearers will be Earl Simon, Melvin Denny, David Dickerson Jr., Jim Bruce Moore, Charles Veasley and the Rev. Bryant Corpening.

Larry Robinson

Larry Eugene Robinson, 51, passed away on Monday, June 16, 2014. He was born in Caldwell County on Oct. 19, 1962, to the late William Albert Robinson and Evelyn Brown Robinson. He was also preceded in death by his twin sons.

Larry is survived by his sons, Larry Robinson Jr. and O’Ryan Robinson; sister, Sheila Anderson and husband, David; brother, Gary Robinson; sister, Pamela Mitchell and husband, Michael; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service for Larry will be held at Word in Truth Ministries on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 3 p.m. with Pastor Bill Bentley officiating.
