Barbara Garland

Barbara Ann Saunders Holman Garland, 57, of Granite Falls went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, June 20, 2014, at Brian Center Viewmont, in Hickory. She was born Jan. 8, 1957, in Catawba County, daughter of the late Minnie V. Sanders.

Barbara was a member of Temple Hill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her first husband, Dewey Lee Holman Sr.; a daughter, Ronda Kay Holman; a son, Gabriel Allen Holman; and a sister, Marie Saunders.

She is survived by her husband, Danny Lee Garland of the home; a daughter, Barbara Jean Gutierrez and husband Zenaido of Hudson; a son, William Jerome Holman of Granite Falls; a stepson, Dewey “Lee” Holman Jr. and wife Deana of Lenoir; a stepdaughter, Donna Church of Granite Falls; grandchildren, Brittany Michelle Adkins and husband Nathan of Granite Falls, Kristin Leann Elizabeth Carr and husband Eric of Lenoir, Zenaido Vences Gutierrez “LilZ” of Hudson, Miguel Vences Gutierrez “Miggy” of Hudson, Christopher Dalton Dotson-Holman of Granite Falls, Whitney Leigh Holman of Granite Falls, Wesley Wayne Church of Lenoir and Angelica Breann Church of Hudson; great-grandchildren, Landon Allen Church of Granite Falls, Alivia Joelle Pruitt of Lenoir, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Pruitt of Lenoir, Kaydence Jo Church and Wesley of Lenoir, Angel Kingston of Hudson, Emilie Kae Rose Carr of Lenoir; a sister, Sylvia Houston and husband Cloyd of Conover; three brothers, Sam Welch of Kings Mountain, Hubert Sanders and Roger Sanders both of Conover; a nephew, Tim Sanders and wife Bonnie of Conover; a niece Darlene Wilkinson and husband Tim of Catawba; a niece Penny Roller and husband Johnny; five more nieces and four more nephews; three great-nieces and two great-nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6 till 8 p.m. at Mackie Funeral Home in Granite Falls. And the Service will be on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. Clyde Bumgarner officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

Burial will follow at Temple Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Steve Cable

Steve Billy Cable, 70, of Chantilly Drive, Granite Falls, went home to be with the Lord, Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Caldwell UNC Health Care. He was born March 26, 1944, in Graham County to the late Loy and Azalea Daniels Cable. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Angela Ree Cable; and a brother of the heart, Wayne Cable.

Steve was a retired upholsterer for Sherrill Furniture. He was a dedicated member and served as a Deacon of Blue Ridge Baptist Church. Steve spent many dedicated years serving as a coach for the Hudson Optimist. He had a true passion for children and was an advocate for every child he came in contact with, particularly children with special needs to whom he had a special ministry. Steve was an avid fisherman and shared many great times on the lake with his friends and loved ones.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Merry D. Cable of the home; two sons, Steven Dale Cable and wife Teresa, and Phillip Loy Cable and wife Shannon, both of Granite Falls; brothers, Gene Cable, Blake Cable and wife Conchita, Lonnie Cable and wife Sherry, all of Robbinsville, Jack “Ed” Hughes and wife Nellie of Lenoir, Ted Cable and wife Sandy, Larry Cable and wife Debbie, both of Hudson; sisters, Roma Nell Hughes Cable of Lenoir, and Sharon Cable Edwards and husband Rev. Mike of Robbinsville; two grandchildren, RaeAnne Rene Cable and Masten Graham Cable; two step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Samantha Barger; and two step-great-grandchildren, Bradley and Andrew Barger.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Baptist Church in Whitnel conducted by the Rev. Larry Winkler, the Rev. Mike Edwards and speaker Ronnie Jewell. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Grayson Barber, Marcus Church, Reece Davis, Bill Cable, David Gilbert and Jason Lail.

Honorary pallbearer will be “Little Buddy,” Masten Cable.

Odell Thomas

Odell Thomas, 73, of Statesville died Wednesday, June 18, 2014.

The family will receive friends Sunday, June 22, from 2-2:55 p.m. in the Fleming Memorial Chapel of Ebony Funeral Services. The funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. Burial will be in the Olive Hill Cemetery.

Marcus DeBeve Jr.

Marcus Edmund DeBeve Jr., 11, of Granite Falls passed away Wednesday, June 18, 2014, at his residence.

Born Aug. 23, 2002, in Caldwell County, he was the son of Amanda Quickel Ward and Marcus DeBeve.

Marcus was a student at Dudley Shoals Elementary School.

He is survived by his mother, Amanda Q. Ward of the home; his father, Marcus DeBeve of Granite Falls; his stepfather, Robert Ward of Granite Falls; his brothers and sisters, Connor Ward, Abigail Day, Jayden Fox, Carson Fox, Aries DeBeve, and Elias DeBeve; and his grandmother, Stephanie Smith of Granite Falls; and many friends and classmates.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 22, 2014, 2 p.m. at Bass-Smith Granite Chapel with the Rev. Rodney Raby officiating.

James Dula

James Rufus Dula, 82, of Roy Dula Place, Lenoir, passed away, Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Caldwell UNC Health Care. He was born Jan. 31, 1932, in Caldwell County to the late Rufus and Alberta Michaux Dula. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Geraldine Roberts, Remather Dula, Jewel Johnson, Sadie Berry; and two brothers, Herman Dula and Richard Dula.

Mr. Dula was retired from Singer Furniture after 30 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Dulatown United Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years wife, Thelma Reid Dula of the home; one son, Donald R. Dula and wife Lerita of Jamestown; three daughters, Elisa B. Price and Rahesia O. Jackson, both of Lenoir, and Cheryl L. Evans and husband Darryl of Charlotte; two brothers, Fredrick R. Dula and Steven T. Dula, both of Lenoir; one sister, Wilma D. Carter of Lenoir; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, June 23, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Dulatown Presbyterian Church conducted by the Rev. E.B. Freeman, the Rev. James Wilfong, the Rev. Helen Dula and the Rev. Isaac Moore.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Serving as pallbearers will be DPC Men’s Council.

Flower bearers will be friends of the family.

Henry Soloman Danner Jr., 89, of Morganton went to be with Jesus on Thursday June 19, 2014, following a period of declining health.

A Private Funeral Service was held on Saturday June 21, 2014.

Thomas Bowman Sr.

Thomas Charles Bowman Sr., 94, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care. He was the 13th of 16 children born to the late Lawrence Bowman and wife Maggie Bowman of Caldwell County.

Mr. Bowman was an Army Veteran having served his country during World War II. His lifelong career was spent in construction.

He was a loving and caring husband and father and a wonderful Pawpaw to his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Esther Moses Bowman; one sister, Glennie Mae Bowman McNeill; five children, Dianne B. Holsclaw and husband Terry, Teresa B. Rader and husband Jack, Tom Bowman Jr. and wife Pam, Susan Bowman and Charles Bowman; seven grandchildren, Sharon Holsclaw, Greg Holsclaw, Scott Rader, Mark Rader, Ashlee Bowman, Ross Bowman, Chad Bowman, and Josh Bowman; and several great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mr. Bowman will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service and Sunday, June 22, 2014, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Clifton Black officiating. Burial will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 prior to the service.

Penny Greene

Penny Phillips Greene, 56, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice. She was born in Caldwell County on May 29, 1958, to Wilma Jean Phillips and the late Banks Wilson Phillips. Penny was married to Donald L. Greene of the residence.

In addition to her father she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Homer Deaton and Ruby Harris, and her paternal grandparents, Jesse B. Phillips and Allie Mae Greer Phillips.

Other than her husband and mother, she is survived by her daughters, Misty Greene Barlowe and husband Aaron, and Amy Greene Stapleton and husband Jacob; stepdaughter, Amanda Page Hewitt; sisters, Lynn Phillips Martin and husband Mike, and Marsha Phillips Gilliam and husband Clark; two grandsons, Brody Luke Barlowe and Braxton Layne Barlowe; two step-granddaughters, Payton Ryleigh Hewitt and Erryn Reese Hewitt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Penny’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Monday, June 23, 2014, at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Jim Evans officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Avery Turbyfill, Scott Turnmire, Duane Turnmire, Michael Turnmire, Trevor Gilliam, and Rick Greene. Honorary pallbearers will be David McCall, Bobby Herman and Mike Bolick.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3 prior to the service.

Maxine Jett

Maxine Livingston Jett, 86, of Granite Falls passed away Saturday, June 20, 2014, at Valdese Hospital.

Mrs. Jett was born in McDowell County, West Virginia, on Feb. 27, 1928, to the late Virgil Wesley Livingston and Elizabeth Jarvis Livingston. She graduated from Hudson High School in1945. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Jett was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, John Harvey Jett, five brothers and three sisters.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, John Jett III and wife Carol of Lenoir, Roger Jett and wife Debbie of Granite Falls, Bruce Jett and wife Jacki of Angier, Scott Jett and wife Lisa of Granite Falls; daughters, Donna Jett Whitson and husband Ted of Greensboro, Pat Jett Thrift of Winston-Salem, Meleah Jett Haas and husband Jeff of Lenoir, Marty Jett Anderson and husband Cliff of Lenoir; and one sister, Betty Winkler of Marietta, Ga. Also left to cherish her memory are her 19 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Maxine Livingston Jett will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Mountain Grove Church with the Rev. Cliff Black and the Rev. Sam Craven officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 23, 2014, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow the service at Mountain Grove Church Cemetery.

Serving as Pallbearers will be Brent Whitson, Jared Jett, Ryan Jett, William Haas, Mikeal Anderson and Brandon Jett.
