Ross Scragg

Karleal “Ross” Scragg, 83, of the Globe community, Collettsville, where he resided for the past 28 years, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, at Caldwell UNC Health Care. He was born Aug. 29, 1930, in the Lincoln County Township of Allen, W.Va., to the late Odell Dorcus and Dorothy Adkins Scragg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennie Lynn Scragg; three sisters, Margaret Howard, Mae Ella Jean Tillman and Patricia Hurd Rowland; and one brother, James Schiely.

Mr. Scragg had lived in Hamilton, Ohio, for 40 years and worked for Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio, where he retired after 25 years. Upon retiring he settled in the Globe community of Collettsville. He achieved his trucking CDL license and went to work for Robert Gragg Nursery, where he enjoyed the open road for several years, before final retirement. He was a member of Globe Baptist Church and a United States Army Veteran. Ross loved attending church, spending time with friends, seeing the United States when he was a truck driver, gardening and fishing. He will be GREATLY missed by all!

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Claudine Gragg Scragg of the home; one daughter, Sherry (John) Davis of Lenoir; four sons, Rickey (Larinda) Scragg of Jacksonburg, Ohio, Dean “Randy” (Gerti) Scragg, Gregory “Greg” (Glenda) Scragg and Charles “Chuck” (Elwanda) Scragg, all of Lenoir; loving daughter-in-law, Evelyn Ann Scragg; and granddaughter-in-law, Caroline Osborne. He was also blessed in life with eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at 3 p.m. at Globe Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Roger Cox. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Len Hodges

Len W. Hodges, 73, of Lenoir died Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Bill Holman

Charles William “Bill” Holman, 75, of Lenoir died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Hudson. He was born June 16, 1938, in Caldwell County to the late A.W. “Bill” and Bartha Weaver Holman.

Mr. Holman was a 1956 graduate of Lenoir High School. He attended Wake Forest University for a year and graduated from Appalachian State University in 1961. He served in the National Guard.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Ashton Holman and wife Andrea of Lenoir, and Jonathan Webster Holman and wife Julie of Granite Falls; daughter, Ms. Laura Holman Hendley of Charlotte; two sisters, Ms. Rena Rash and Mrs. Brenda Mitchell and husband Bob of Lenoir; seven grandchildren, Katherine Claire Hendley, Nathan Scott Hendley, Justin Harrison, Ashton Paige, Khaley Grace, Aubrey Leigh, Ashleigh Kaylan Holman.

An informal celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Dry Ponds Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Rick Crouse and the Rev. Josh Dellinger.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St. NW, Lenoir, N.C. 28645.
