Luberta Stepps Montgomery, 87, of 2544 Grandview Circle SW, Lenoir, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013, following declining health in Grandview Villa. Mrs. Montgomery was born May 1, 1926, in Black Mountain. She was the daughter of the late Bill Stepps and the late Mamie Corpening Stepps. She attended Logan Memorial Baptist Church in Morganton. Mrs. Montgomery retired from the former Hickory Motel Lodge after 10 years of service in housekeeping. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Montgomery, and two sisters, Marie Stepps and Burenia Stepps. She is survived by her sons, Bobby Stepps of Lenoir and Jimmy Stepps Sr. of Upper Manhattan, N.Y., and daughter JoAnn Stepps of Newark, N.J., a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at 3 p.m. at E.R. McGimpsey Sr. Memorial Chapel at Ebony Funeral Services with Bishop Michael Sloan, 1st Lady Evangelist Mary Sloan, and Evangelist Carleene Horton officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:55 p.m. in the Chapel. The burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Ebony Funeral Services of Lenoir is serving the Montgomery Family. Rickie Hewey Crane, 62, of Greenway Street, Lenoir, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at Camelot Manor Nursing Facility. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.
Marvin Joseph Smith, 89, of Elkin died Monday, Sept. 16, 2013. Survivors include his children, Jeannie Smith Tate of Lenoir and Carol Smith Crabtree (James) of Tennessee; and grandchildren, Leslie Tate Sanders (Douglas) and Donald David Andrew Tate of Lenoir, and Joseph Benjamin Tate (Spring).
