On Friday morning, Sept. 20, 2013, God in His infinite wisdom called “Ed” home to eternal rest. “Ed” was well known for his quiet, easy mannerisms and love for his fellow man. Also known by many for his building and repairing houses, electrical, plumbing, etc., all over Lenoir. “Ed” served in the U.S. Navy for several years. He attended school in Greensboro, where he mastered his skills in carpentry, etc. He later retired from St. Johns Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., as housekeeping supervisor and from the New York City Transit Authority as a bus driver. Born to the late Arnie W. and Grace Lipford. He also was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary Eliza, a sister, Trisha Mae Lipford, and a son, Kelvin. Those left to cherish his memory are his lifelong partner, Mamie J. Bowers (Lipford); his daughters, Debra Johnson (Tony Epps) of Lenoir, Evangelist Sharon Patterson (Fabiah Lawson) of Columbus, Ohio, Gloria McDowell (Arthur) of Washington state, Carol and Michelle Lipford of Brooklyn, N.Y., Felicia Lipford of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son, Edward Lee Lipford Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a special friend and caregiver, Martha Bowers; sisters, Jerlene L. Michaux of Lenoir, Juristine L. Abernathy of Morrisville, Jenette L. Ruitt (Charles) of Cary; a brother, Ernest Durant Lipford (Marietta) of Lenoir; grands, great-grands and like grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013, at 3 p.m. at St. Paul AME Church, Lenoir, with the Rev. Dr. Byron Grayson officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:55 p.m. at the Chuch. The burial will be private. Ebony Funeral Services of Lenoir is serving the Lipford Family. Frances Holder Scott, 89, of Lenoir passed away Sunday, Sept. 22, 2013, at Shaire Center.
Born in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late William Hill Holder and Ruth Sharpe Holder.
Mrs. Scott was a homemaker and a member of Harrisburg Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter Scott Jr.; brothers, Roscoe Holder, Archie Holder, Henry Holder, Thomas Holder, Ray Holder and Warren Holder; and sisters, Mary Lou Holder, Nancy Cloer, Lucy Dula, Mildred Duncan, Ruby Pritchard, Pearl Jones, Hattie Hamby and Minnie Ennis.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Stephen L. Scott and wife Kay Scott of Hudson; two grandchildren, Leslie Edney and husband Dennis, and David Scott, all of Hudson; and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013, at Blue Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Tony Harris officiating.

Mary Sue Clark Morgan, 52, of Lenoir died Sept. 19, 2013. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the E.R. McGimpsey Sr. Memorial Chapel at Ebony Funeral Services. The family will receive friends noon to 12:55 p.m. Burial will be in Newland.
John Darius McMillian, 61, of Todd St., Lenoir, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.
David Lee Costner, 63 of Hickory died Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013.
Born July 15, 1950, in Hickory he was the son of the late David Costner and Naomi Goodwin Costner.
