James Wakefield

James Luther Wakefield, 91, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Friday, Sept. 27, 2013. He was born March 31, 1922, in Chatham County to the late Robert and Ethel Johnson Wakefield. Mr. Wakefield was a member of First Baptist Church, Granite Falls. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II.

He is preceded in death by both parents; his loving wife, “Polly” Winkler Wakefield; one grandson, Sean Johnston; two brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his daughter, Pamela and husband Michael Johnston of Hickory; two grandchildren, April and husband Luke Walsh, and Ben Johnston; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends and family at First Baptist Church, Granite Falls, on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, from 3 to 4 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Dr. Robert B. Evans Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by DAV Chapters 6 and 84.

Fred Perkins

Fred “Bub” McKinley Perkins, 85, of Morganton died Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013.

A service to celebrate his life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Fleming Memorial Chapel, Morganton. The family will receive friends from 1-1:55 p.m. at the chapel.

Henry Deal

Henry Worth Deal, 83, of Lenoir went home to be with his Lord on Friday, Oct. 4, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care – Hudson.

Born July 13, 1930, in Burnsville, he was the son of the late Wade Dargen Deal and Mable Wheeler Deal.

Mr. Deal was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Cantor Deal, on Sept. 11, 2008.

Mr. Deal worked for Singer Furniture for many years and was a member of North Catawba Baptist Church.

He loved to fish, listen to bluegrass gospel music, growing muscadines, and when he was younger, he loved to coon hunt.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, Johnny Deal and wife Phyllis of Lenoir, and Howard Clayton Deal and wife Lucy of Garden Grove, Calif.; his daughter, Pamela Deal Smith of Lenoir; three brothers, Donald Deal, Phillip Deal and Charles Deal; two sisters, Juanita DeWitt and Betty Jean Pruett. He also leaves behind three grandchildren, Elizabeth Smith, Stacy Deal and the Rev. Jonathan Deal; and one great-grandson, Noah Deal.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at North Catawba Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Doug St. John and the Rev. Jonathan Deal officiating. Burial will be private.

The family will receive friends at the church from 1-2 p.m. Monday.
