Carolyn Austin Swanson, 80, of Lenoir passed away Friday, April 11, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir. Born May 26, 1933, in Caldwell County she was a daughter of the late Ruth McCoy Austin.
Other than her mother, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Vicki Good; one sister, Margaret Moore; and four brothers, Jack, Bill, Joe and Roy Austin.
Mrs. Swanson had taught music for over 30 years at the Hudson Child Development Center in Hudson. She will always be remembered for her love of animals.
She is survived by a daughter, Lori Harmon and husband Richard of Lenoir; five grandchildren, Carol Mecimore and husband Scott, Amy Jenkins, Jennifer Garrett and husband Drew, Jessica Hall and husband Tracy, and Jenny Shatley; seven great-grandchildren, Cody, Drew, Jordan, Jailee, Keaton, Caroline and Anderson; her niece, Debbie Chapman and husband David; and her great-nieces, Brooke and her beloved Amy. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
The family and friends will be having a Celebration of Life Service, Saturday, April 19, 2014, at 5 p.m. at the Lenoir Golf Club.

John Franklin Byrd, 88, of Tywood Street, Lenoir, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Hudson. He was born Aug. 21, 1925, in Smith County, Va., to the late C.S. Byrd and Bessie Haga Byrd. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Rachel B. Byrd; second wife, Cora L. Setzer Byrd; and one brother, Luther Byrd.
Mr. Byrd was retired from International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He attended South Lenoir Church of God. He was also a United States World War II Army Veteran as a Machine Gunner and fought at the Battle of the Bulge.
Survivors include one son, Jerry F. Byrd and wife Ann of Gamewell; one daughter, Diane Windham of Hickory; one brother, Glen Byrd of Lenoir; one sister, Mary Harrison and husband C.L. of Lee Summitt, Mo.; Cora Lee’s daughters, Doris Wallace and husband Glen of Lenoir, Joyce Price and husband Larry of Collettsville, and Lois Chapman of Whitnel; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held Friday, April 18, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Park conducted by Pastor Sam Abee and Glen Wallace.

Jay Thomas Ferguson, 76, of Lenoir died April 15, 2014. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Ebony Funeral Services of Lenoir.
Betty Grayson Hunt, 82, of Benfield’s Landing, Lake James, died Tuesday, April 15, 2014. Born in Cleveland County on Nov. 10, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Howard Hamby Grayson and Myrtle Belle Wellmon Grayson. Betty was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church. Along with her husband, Jim, she was an avid walleye fisherman at both Lake James and Lake Fontana. This was their favorite hobby throughout the years. They operated Benfield’s Landing and Marina at Lake James since 1973, creating many years of good memories there for family and friends. She was loved by many and will be missed.
A devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Betty is survived by her sons, Scott Hunt and his wife, Sherry, of Lake James, Donnie Hunt of Lake James, and Steve Hunt and his wife, Gilda, of Polkville; grandchildren, Amy Hunt Miller and her husband, Cameron, Jamie Hunt, Jennifer Street and her husband, Kevin, Cory Hunt, Kayla Hunt, Patty Tripp, and Randy Spangler and his wife, Jennie; great-grandchildren, Ethan Miller, Evan Miller, Trevor Webb, Ashley Webb, Toby Street, and Andrew Bruno; and a great-great-granddaughter, Ashlynn Bruno.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James Lee “Jim” Hunt; a brother, Howard Grayson Jr.; sisters, Evelyn Wilson and Virginia Grigg; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda Hunt.
The memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, April 18, 2014, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:30 until 4 p.m. prior to the service.

Gloie Dee Bowen, 57, of Lenoir passed away on Tuesday April 15, 2014.
