Howard Davenport

Howard Lee Davenport, a 1978 graduate of Wilkes Central High School, passed away at the age of 53 on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at home.

Mr. Davenport was born on March 16, 1960, in Lenoir to Howard Lee Carlton and Ila Mae Davenport Carlton of Boomer. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and received the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Naval Expeditionary Medal, and Meritorious Unit Commendation.

He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Robert James Carlton; paternal grandparents, Roy I. and Sophronia Carlton; and maternal grandparents, Eugene and Alice Davenport.

Mr. Davenport is survived by his son, Julian Lesteffan Russell of Charleston, S.C.; his mother; three brothers, Michial (wife Lisa Carlton) of Atlanta, Ga., Joseph Carlton of Charlotte, and Mark (wife Naivette Carlton) of Fremont, Calif.; one sister, Eileen (husband Randy) Parsons of Hickory; sister-in-laws, Dixie Carlton of Lincolnton, and Bonnie Carlton of Charlotte; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Thankful Baptist Church, Boomer. The church will open at 1 p.m. for the receiving of friends. The Revs. Graylin Carlton, Ronald Howell, and John Rowe will officiate. Interment will occur at the Thankful Baptist Church cemetery immediately following the service. Military rites performed by Wilkes VFW.

Mildred Moore

Mildred Carolyn Isaac Moore, 85, formerly of Lenoir, passed away Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at her residence. Born March 14, 1928, in Caldwell County, Mrs. Moore was a daughter of the late Richard and Josephine Tuttle Isaac and the wife of the late Granville Moore Jr.

Other than her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Rick Moore and Scott Moore.

Mrs. Moore was a former teacher’s assistant at Lower Creek Elementary School and also worked in the cafeteria. She was a member of Lower Creek Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School.

She is survived by her son, Granville Moore III and wife Sandi; two brothers, Lewis Isaac and wife Mary, and Joe Isaac and wife Anzonette; three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mrs. Moore’s life will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 16, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 10 until 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service.
