L C Hudspeth

L C Hudspeth, 85, of Collettsville died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at his residence. Mr. Hudspeth was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Caldwell County to the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry and Drusilla Hudspeth.

Mr. Hudspeth was a member of Green Valley Baptist Church and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Hudspeth is survived by his wife, Marie Hatley Hudspeth of the home; one son, Terry Brent Hudspeth and wife Barbara of Collettsville; one half-sister, Helen Kirby of Collettsville; and one granddaughter, Charity Hudspeth and husband David Zeilstra. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory. Interment will follow at Hudspeth Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6-7:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Carthel Childres

Carthel Childres, 83, of Connelly Springs died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013.

A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at Crosslink Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1-2 p.m. at the church.

Allan Crotts

Allan Roy Crotts, 62, of Granite Falls passed away on Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at his home.

Born Aug. 8, 1951, in Caldwell County, Allan was a son of the late Roy and Leona McCall Crotts. Allan grew up in the Baton community and was a carpenter by trade. He will be remembered as a beloved father, brother, Paw Paw, friend and partner.

Survivors include his son and best friend, Johnny Crotts and wife Amy; his grandchildren, Ashlee Crotts and Amanda Crotts; his brother, Danny Crotts; and Allan’s partner in life, Kathy “Kat” McCall.

The family will have a gathering in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to celebrate Allan’s life.

Dennis Greer

Dennis Ray Greer, 67, of Rainbow Heights, Lenoir, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He was born June 17, 1946, in Caldwell County to the late Raymond E. and Ola Mae Wheeling Greer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Lee Greer, and one sister, Ruth Hester.

Mr. Greer was a truck driver for Caldwell Freight and a member of Seeds for Harvest Church. He loved the Lord, his family and loved to work.

Survivors include his wife, Levonne P. Greer of the home; one son, Jeremy Greer and wife Nikki of Hudson; one daughter, Tammy G. Miller and husband Eric of Lenoir; three brothers, RJ Greer and wife Jean of Lenoir, Larry Greer and wife Linda of Boone, and Kenneth Greer and wife Martha of Gamewell; two grandsons, Bryson Greer and Micah Greer; and special family friend, Connie Cook.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Mike Owens and Pastor Jeremy Greer. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Eric Miller, Bryson Greer, Tommy Booth, Norman Sullivan, Ben Powell and Kelly Parsons.

Craig Rector

Craig B. Rector, 91, of Lenoir passed away Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at Shaire Center.

Born Jan. 15, 1922, in Burke County, he was the son of the late Claude Rector and Emily Craig Rector Herman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters; Noreen Bush, Margarette Hickman, Bernice Land and Beatrice Washam.

Mr. Rector was a lifelong member of Colliers United Methodist Church, where he has been recognized for his dedicated service for 50-plus years as Sunday School Secretary. He worked at Hudson Hardware for 36 years. He served in the U.S. Navy on the Navy Amphibious Force Ship LCI-G-470 and was a member of the N.C. National Guard for 28 years and the American Legion Post 392 for 67 years.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lee Rector of the home; a daughter, Melodie R. Mathes and husband Nickey; grandchildren, Cory Mathes and wife Nikki, and Amy Wimbish and husband Carey Jr.; and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Keller Mathes, and Abram Lefler.

Funeral services for Mr. Rector will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at 12 p.m. at Colliers United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Lorie Ann Bowen. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Cory Mathes, Carey Wimbish Jr., Brett Bolick, Ryan Bolick, David Pilkenton and Allen Henderson.

Rufus West Jr.

Rufus Hugh West Jr., 69, of Morganton passed away Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. West was born Oct. 4, 1944, the son of the late Rufus Hugh West Sr. and Annie Louise Tedder West. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his aunt, Charlotte Kelly.

He is survived by his son, Nathan West and wife Kelly of Valdese; two precious grandchildren, Corban and Lily West of Valdese; the mother of his son, Hilda Bailey and husband Alan; two sisters, Elmedia Atkins and husband Jimmy of Gamewell, and Peggy Wilson of Lenoir; a brother, Dwayne T. West of Morganton; a host of nieces and nephews and close friends and family members in Waynesville.

Mr. West was retired from Lowe’s Hardware after 20 years plus and also from Henson Building Supply in Granite Falls. After his retirement, he continued farming and helping others. Mr. West was known for his desire to help others in their time of need. He would give whatever he had to see others bettered. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and National Guard for six years. He was a member of Hartland Baptist Church in Burke County and a member of the Moose Lodge of Lenoir. He was a graduate of Gamewell High School class of 1962.

A graveside services for Mr. West will be held Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at 3:30 p.m. at Hartland Baptist Church Cemetery, and the service will follow in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Eric Smith officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home from 6 until 8 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Steven Clark, Tim West, Nathan West, Randy Bailey, Nicholas Bailey and Seth Shatley.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to New Dimensions Charter School, 550 Lenoir Road, Morganton, NC 28655.

Barbara Suddreth

Barbara Jo Greene Suddreth, 65, of Lydia Avenue, Valdese, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at Valdese Hospital. She was born Aug. 14, 1948, in Caldwell County to the late Jack Greene and Margaret Greene Franklin.

Mrs. Suddreth was a homemaker and attended Praise Assembly Church in Glen Alpine.

Survivors include one son, Clarence Money of Scranton, Penn.; two daughters, Nancy Money of Morganton and Mary Ribelin and husband Glenn of Jonesville, S.C.; four brothers, John Franklin and Rick Franklin, both of York, S.C., Wade Franklin of Kings Mountain, and Leonard Franklin of Charlotte; two sisters, Mary Ellen Holland and Phoebe D. Hale, both of Stanley; fiancé, Gary Billings; six grandchildren, Joshua Money, Joshua Ribelin, Tiffany Roberson, Dona Roberson, Angel Roberson and Thomas Money; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Glenn Ribelin and the Rev. Kevin Crawford. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ray Craig

Ray Gilbert Craig, 89, of South Haven Court, Lenoir, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Hudson. He was born Oct. 5, 1924, in Caldwell County to the late Azor and Edna Bolick Craig. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, David Ray Craig; and one brother, Dennis Craig.

Mr. Craig was retired from Singer Furniture and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline Campbell Craig of the home; one son, Keith Douglas Craig and wife Sandra of Lenoir; one daughter, Kimberly Hamby and husband Jimmy of Lenoir; five brothers, Gene Craig and wife Faye, Albert Craig and wife Nell, Howard Craig and wife Pauline, and Bruce Craig, all of Lenoir; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. John Gray. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Douglas Scott

Douglas Richard Scott of Inman, S.C., died Nov. 30, 2013.

Survivors include his wife, Cecile Dianne Scott, sons Douglas "Ricky" Scott and Anthony Scott, and a daughter, Melissa Scott.

Services will be 2-4 p.m. Dec. 3 at Cornerstone Church of Gaffney, S.C.

Henry Crotts

Henry Harding Crotts, 91, 6674 Highway 91 North, Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., passed away at the Specialty Select Hospital, Bristol, Tenn., on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013. Mr. Crotts was born Nov. 3, 1922, in Caldwell County to the late Frank Crotts and Betty Walker Crotts. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Crotts; a sister, Erlene Conway; and two brothers, Roy Crotts and Charlie Crotts. His hobbies were spending time with his grandkids and watching the Atlanta Braves.

Mr. Crotts was a World War II Veteran of the United States Army, and had attended the College Avenue Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Broyhill Furniture in Lenoir.

Survivors include a son, Richard Crotts and wife Donna of Laurel Bloomery, Tenn.; daughter, Pam Dellinger of Granite Falls; brother, Albert Crotts of Lenoir; four grandchildren, Micah Crotts and Chris Crotts of Laurel Bloomery, Tenn., Cliff Crotts of Trade, Tenn., and Gwen Benton of Morganton; six great-grandchildren; and former wife, Frieda Crotts of Granite Falls. Several niece and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Henry Crotts will be conducted on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at 11 a.m. from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Pastor Samuel Faulkner to officiate. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Pallbearers will be Chris Crotts, Craig Benton, Kevin Howard, Jesse Stapleton, Cody Matheson, Jacob Stapleton and Daniel Faulkner. Honorary pallbearers will be Caleb Benton, Tyler Crotts, and Gary Howard. Military graveside services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. from the Mountain Home National Cemetery to be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.

Norman McNeely

Norman Michael McNeely, 44, of Stamey Road, Granite Falls, died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013. He was born Sept. 10, 1969, in Caldwell County to Margaret Trivette and the late Norman McNeely. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ashley McNeely; and one brother, Tim McNeely.

Survivors in addition to his mother include four daughters, Angela M. Rhoney and husband Jason of Vale, Ashley E. Smith, Meagan R. McNeely and Emily L. McNeely, all of Hudson; three brothers, Greg Oliver and wife Donna of Lenoir, Jeff Oliver of Granite Falls and Derek Burleson of Valdese; sisters, Connie Wilcox of Hudson, and Robin Rucker and husband John of Granite Falls; one grandson, Jacob Rhoney; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at 5 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Rick Crouse and the Rev. Josh Dellinger.
