Dorothy Miller

Mrs. Dorothy Freeman Miller, age 65, of Granite Falls, passed away on Saturday February 9, 2013 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Born December 14, 1947 in Avery County, Dorothy was a daughter of the late Lawrence William and Verna Sue Daniels Freeman.  She was a member of the Union Baptist Church where she served as music director for a number of years.  She was a retired school teacher from the Caldwell County School System and was a member of the NCEA.  Dorothy was also known to help raise dogs and cats until they could find a good home. 

Survivors include her husband, Grady Miller of the Home; a sister, Sherry Love, husband Finley, Jr., of Spruce Pine; two brothers, Lane Freeman and Max Freeman, wife Michelle, both of Morganton; an aunt, Phyllis Thomson; three nieces, Dianna Love, Megan Ritchie and Maci Freeman; a nephew, Scott Love; Dorothy is also survived by numerous other relatives. 

A celebration of Dorothy’s life will be held on Monday, February 11, 2013 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Pastor Gary Lawrence officiating.  Interment will follow the service in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

Ola Hamby

Mrs. Ola Barlow Hamby, age 76, of Lenoir, passed away on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at the Carolinas Medical Center in Concord.

Born August 7, 1936 in Caldwell County, Ola was a daughter of the late Joseph and Ethel Ferguson Barlow.  She was a member of the Cajah’s Mountain Baptist Church and the Gamewell Ruritan Club.  She had worked in textiles for many years.  Ola really enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John O. Hamby; six sisters, Atha Barlow, Ruby Williams, Hazel Griest, Maryhill Maltba, Mabel Goodwin and Margaret Coffey; six brothers, Norman, Roy, Paul, David, Frank and Perry Barlow.

Survivors include her children, Robin Carswell, husband Eddie, Crystal Bolick, Robert Hamby and Charles Hamby; one sister, Nancy Caldwell; four grandchildren, Kaylin Carswell, Cody Hamby, Cheyanna and Clayton Bolick; she is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. 

A celebration of Ola’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the Cajah’s Mountain Baptist Church at 4:00 PM with Pastor Doug Woody officiating.  Interment will follow the service in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM at the church. Memorials can be made to the Gamewell Ruritan Club or the Cajah’s Mountain Baptist Church. Martha Reid

Martha Cloer Reid, 63, of Lenoir, passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2013 at Gateway Nursing Center.

Born April 10, 1949 in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Cloer, and Ester Watson Cloer.  She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Richard Reid. 

Mrs. Reid was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hudson.  She worked in business as a CPA, and later was in sales at Walmart.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Clinton Reid (Penny) and Rick Reid (Elizabeth), all of Lenoir; her siblings, George Cloer, Trina Haigler and Wesley Cloer.   Also she is survived by four grandchildren, Hannah Reese (Benny), Emily Mandeville (Ray), Joshua Reid, and Makayela Reid, and two-great grandchildren, Lyla Reese, and Katherine Mandeville.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 4:00 PM at St. John’s Lutheran Church with the Rev. Gary Vogelpohl officiating.  Inurnment will be at the church columbarium.  The family will speak to friends after the service.

Robert Hardin Jr.

Robert Moore Hardin, Jr., 78, passed away February 10, 2013 in Leesburg, FL.  Born June  26, 1934, Bob was a graduate of Lenoir High School, class of 1952, a US Army veteran and a former driver for Greyhound Lines.  He was the son of the late Robert Moore Hardin, Sr. and Marguerite Banks Hardin of Lenoir.  He is survived by his wife, Patricia Hardin, a daughter, a son and grandchildren; his sister, Louise Hardin Hood, brother in law, Ben Hood, Jr., nieces and nephews.

 

Eugene Thomas

Mr. Eugene Thomas, 66, of 4024 Piney Road, Morganton, NC answered the call of the Lord on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Grace Hospital following a brief illness.

Born October 19, 1946 in Burke County to Laura Edmonson Thomas of Morganton, NC and the late Tommy L. Thomas.

He was a member of Hartland Church of God where he served as Vice-President of Men About Change.  He retired from Broughton Hospital after working Security for 27 years.  He was on the Board of Directors for the Hartland Community Center and served as Treasurer of the Hartland Community Center.  He was a graduate of Morganton High School Class of 1965.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife of 48 years, Frances M. Johnson Thomas of the home; his children, Carlton Lamonte (Felicia) Thomas, and Allen E. (Marcella) Thomas, all of Morganton, NC; grandchildren, Ryan Erwin, Jasmine Thomas, Cameron Thomas, Josh Castro, Jordan Thomas, Andrew Jenkins, Alek Thomas, and Alana Thomas; siblings, Diann (Oscar) Tate, Belinda (Rev. Walter) Vinson, Wayne Thomas, Steve (Sue)Thomas, all of Morganton, NC; Frank (Sandy) Thomas of Claremont, NC; and Phillip (Vonda) Thomas of Charlotte, NC; mother-in-law, Odessa K. Johnson of Morganton, NC; aunt, Dorothy Thomas of Marion, NC; and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and cherished friends.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at Hartland Church of God with the Revs. Eugene Kincaid and Max Bristol officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00-1:55 P.M. at the church prior to the services. Burial will follow services at Hartland Community Cemetery.

The family will be at the home of his son, Allen E. (Marcella) Thomas 111 Woodbine Terrace, Morganton, NC, from 4:00-7:00 P.M.

Ernestine Patterson

Mrs. Ernestine Patterson, age 63, of Lenoir, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Born September 12, 1949 in Caldwell County, Ernestine was a daughter of the late Ernest Davenport and Juristine Patterson.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Green Hill United Methodist Church.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Glynnis Fox; two brothers, Calvin Propst and Martin Propst; and one granddaughter, Haley Patterson.

Survivors include two daughters, Angela Michelle Patterson and Marissa Karen Mitchell, husband Joseph, both of Lenoir; four sons, Timothy Dewayne Patterson of Baltimore, MD, Ralph “Toby” Patterson of Newton, NC, Patrick Jerome Patterson, wife Amy, of Lenoir, and Greg Patterson, wife Ginger, of Lenoir; her companion of 33 years , Charles Steve Dula of Lenoir; two sisters, Gaynell Dabner, husband Bruce, of Cincinnati, OH, and Evelyn Patterson of Kentucky; two brothers, Larry Joe Patterson of Boone, and Tracy Delmar Ray of Hickory; Ernestine is survived by 19 grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

A celebration of Ernestine’s life will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service.  Interment will follow the service at the Dulatown Cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM.
