Calvin Braswell

Calvin Dallas Braswell, 88, of Conover passed away Sunday May 5, 2013, at Catawba Regional Hospice.

A memorial service will be held at Abundant Life Tabernacle, May 7, 2 p.m. Memorials may be made to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.

Michael Carlton

Michael E. Carlton, 57, of Realty Street, Lenoir, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He was born Jan. 12, 1956, in Wayne County, Mich.

Mr. Carlton was employed in the furniture industry. He was a United States Navy Veteran.

Survivors, include his wife, Alice E. Carlton of the home; daughter, Amber York of Lenoir; and one granddaughter, Chloe Carroll of Lenoir.

No services are planned at this time.

Melvin Fox

Melvin Javan Fox, 84, born Feb. 9, 1929, went to be with the Lord at home on May 4, 2013. He was the youngest of seven children. Melvin was born in Lenoir and resided in Portsmouth, Va. He served three years in the Air Force and retired after 17 years in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruby Fox; daughters, Sylvia Fagan and husband Michael, Cynthia Wells, Rebecca Bremer and husband Richard, and Joy Fox all of Portsmouth, Va.; grandchildren, Amber Fagan, Amanda Fagan, Sara Norman, Jacob Jeske, Ricky Bremer, Wesley Bremer; great-grandchildren, Jillian Jeske, Scarlet Norman, Gabriel Jeske; brother, Glenn Wilson Fox and wife Nancy of Keystone Heights, Fla.; and sister, Hattie Jane Arnold of Lenoir.

Melvin was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Chesapeake and had a deep desire for people to know the Lord as their Savior. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents Rev. Jacob Wesley Fox and Hattie Bell Fox of Lenoir; brothers, the Rev. Finley Wesley Tilton Fox, Noland Lee Fox; and sisters, Ruth Eller Loman and Virginia Christine Clarke.

Javan had a deep love for his Lord and Savior, for his wife, his family and his church family. He also loved fishing and tried very hard to catch the “Big One” and had a passion for hunting. He was often found tinkering on his boat and fishing poles at The River House in Hertford. He had a great love for his friends and never knew a stranger, and loved to talk about the Navy; his military stories never ceased to entertain. He was quick to come to the aid of those in need. Javan is going to be greatly missed as husband (her best friend), as Dad, Papa, as a brother and friend. We know that he is well and safe with our heavenly Father and we will see him soon.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 9, at 2 p.m. in Temple Baptist Church with Pastor Jerry Greco officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Union Mission. Charles Estes

Charles Dallas Estes, 71, of Hickory passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at his residence following a period of declining health.

Mr. Estes was born on May 2, 1942, in Caldwell County to the late Clyde Ray and Lucille Vines Estes. He was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church. Other than spending time with his family, he had a deep love and joy for classic cars and his 1955 Chevy.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one brother, Jerry Estes.

Survivors include his wife, Kathy Lynn Estes of the home; stepsons, Randy Owenby and William Owenby of Hickory; son, David Estes and Melissa Price of Lenoir; and the joy of his life, grandchildren Marcus Price, Abby Estes and Avery Estes, all of Lenoir. Also surviving are brothers and sisters Ray Estes of Lenoir, Nelda Griffin and husband Steve of Morganton, Larry Estes of Lenoir, Carolyn Snyder and husband Joe of Lenoir, and Dennis Estes of Lenoir, numerous nieces and nephews, and special friends Wally Buss and wife Glenda of Morganton.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Hensley and the Rev. Ernest Richards officiating. Interment will follow in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the North Carolina National Guard and Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Tuesday May 7, 2013, from 6-8 p.m. at Providence Baptist Church.

Royal Watson Jr.

Royal Dixon Watson Jr., 80, of Hickory passed away Monday, May 6, 2013, at Lutheran Home Hickory West.

Born Feb. 13, 1933, in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Royal Dixon Watson Sr. and Bessie Bryant Watson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret Correan Webb Watson, and a sister, Ruby Watson Bumgarner.

He was the loving father of daughters, Olivia Watson Stanley and husband Jerry of Lenoir, Wanda Watson Yelton and husband Ray of Lenoir, Brenda Watson Greer and husband Danny of Lenoir, and a son, Rondal Watson of Lenoir; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Jewel Watson Nelson of Lenoir, Opal Watson Crotts of Hudson, and Jean Watson Price of Hudson; and a brother, Ned Watson of Hickory.

Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2013, 4 p.m. at Sunset Hills Cemetery with Chaplin Nancy Campbell and Chaplin Steve Butler officiating.

JB Miller, 70, of Lenoir passed away on Monday, May 6, 2013, at his residence.
