Frances Lockman

Frances Geraldyne Newton Lockman, 68, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2013, at her home.

Born July 31, 1944, in Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late George Lee Newton and Carrie Frances Robinson Newton. 

Geraldyne grew up in Iron Station and graduated from Lincolnton High School in 1962. She studied education at High Point College and Appalachian State University, where she received a Master of Arts. Geraldyne retired in 2006 from the Caldwell County School System, where she taught fourth- and fifth-graders for 33½ years and received many honors and awards. After retirement, Geraldyne volunteered at the Helping Hands Clinic in Lenoir.

Geraldyne was a kind and gentle soul. She had a loving and generous heart and was always giving to her parents, husband, daughters, grandchildren, and friends.  

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 50 years, John Wesley Lockman; three daughters, Maria Michaelle Lockman Greer, Jennifer Gayle Lockman, and Jonjie Joanne Lockman; and four grandchildren, Carrie Frances Greer, Sydney Gail Greer, Bergsvein Wesley Toverud, and Shelton Lee Toverud.

A memorial service will be held at Pendry’s Chapel on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at 7 p.m.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m.  

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Dottie Tugman, Jane Curtis, and Kim Avery for their love and care for Geraldyne over the last few years as well as Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care during her final days.

Lillian Kincaid

Lillian Loretta Lowery Kincaid, 86, formerly of Lenoir, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Valdese Hospital.

Born May 27, 1927, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Lowery and Lillie Willis Lowery.   

Mrs. Kincaid retired from Henredon Furniture, having worked as a technician in the cabinet room for 18 years, and was a member of Littlejohn United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Vernon Kincaid Sr., who passed away in 2005; one daughter-in-law, Shelia Kincaid; four brothers, Arthur Lowery, Albert Lowery, Virgil Lowery, and Lester Lowery; and three sisters, Eula Swafford, Faye Hennesse, and Pat Orr.  

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, James Vernon Kincaid Jr. of Hickory; two daughters, Janice Hartley of Lenoir, and Gail Bennett and husband Howard of Morganton; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois Jensen of Florida, and two brothers, Robert Lowery of Tennessee, and Eugene Lowery of Michigan.

Funeral services honoring Mrs. Kincaid will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at 12 p.m. at Littlejohn United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Bolick officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church.  

Serving as pallbearers will be Bob Hartley, Shawn Hartley, Frank Hartley, Tyler Lawing, Ronnie Elderth, and James Vernon Kincaid III.

Willie Houck

Willie Sue Houck, 74, of Lenoir passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2013, at her home. She was born March 6, 1939, in Caldwell County, the youngest daughter of the late Ben R. and Alma Davis Houck. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers Eugene Carlton Houck, Billy Dean Houck, James Edward Houck and Gerald Thomas Houck

Ms. Houck was Methodist by faith and served as the church organist for 52 years. She was employed at National Veneer Company for many years, and was a skilled seamstress, enjoyed decorating and traveling, and spent countless hours researching her family genealogy.

Survivors include sisters, Betty L. Houck and Marlon H. (and the late Foard) Prestwood, both of Lenoir; a brother, Larry B. (Ann) Houck of McCormick, S.C.; one niece, Lauri Houck (Darren) Stilwell of Lenoir; one nephew, Carey J. (Julie Egan) Houck of Charlotte; great nephews, Benjamin R. (Emma Dobbin) Pannenbacker, Luke A. Pannenbacker and Riley J. Houck; great-nieces, Rachel E. Houck and Madeleine G. Houck; and one great-great-nephew, Liam R. Pannenbacker.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Gamewell United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Alice Day. Graveside rites will be private.

Arlene Brown

Mrs. Arlene Bare Brown, 68, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, July 15, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice & Palliative Care. Mrs. Brown was born in Ashe County on Jan. 27, 1945, to the late Ted and Virginia Greer Bare. She was married to Carl E. Brown of the home.

Mrs. Brown was an active member of Community Baptist Church where she enjoyed serving the Lord and particularly helping others. She had a love for flowers and hummingbirds but the absolute joy of her life were her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her son, Larry Greene and her sister, Pamela Bare.

Other than her husband she is survived by her children, Debbie Parrish and husband Willis of China Grove, Tammy Morales and fiancé Tony Shoe of Concord, and Billy Sheets and wife Teresa of Wilkes County; brothers, Gary Bare of Concord, Rondell Bare of Midland, and Charles Bare of Salisbury; sister, Monetta Ballard of Kannapolis; grandchildren, Brandi Kilgore, Joshua Parrish, Brian Greene, Anndreia Gibbs, Kendra Greene, Dustin Greene; and seven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Mrs. Brown’s life will be held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at Community Baptist Church with Pastor Waitsel Beard and Pastor Robert Setzer officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3 until 4:30 in the church sanctuary. Interment will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Joshua Parrish, Brian Greene, Dustin Greene, Tony Shoe, Chad Kilgore, and Stephen Houck.

Patrick Pento

Patrick Pento, 89, of Olde Farm Road, Hudson, died Sunday, July 14, 2013, at Lenoir Park. He was born July 7, 1924, in Everett, Mass., to the late Angelo and Rose Lafreniere Pento. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rita Pento; three brothers, Angelo Pento, John Pento and Tony Pento; and two sisters, Mary Vassello and Phyllis Immarino.

Mr. Pento was retired from the U.S. Federal Government and was a United States WWII Navy Veteran.

Survivors include five daughters, Rosemary Niewold and husband Arthur of Hudson, Kathy Ferrell and husband Terry Lee of Portland, Ore., Patricia Pento of Orlando, Fla., Kathy O’Brien of Massachusetts, and Claire Mabett and husband Tom of Cape Cod, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Steve Butler. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Lenoir Park and Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, for the special care given to Mr. Pento.
