Edith Leota Watson Lackey, 86, of Hickory passed away on Monday, July 22, at Frye Regional Hospital.
Born Feb. 2, 1927, in Deep Gap, Edith was a daughter of the late Everette and Lousia Greene Watson. She attended the Calvary Christian Church and had worked in textiles for many years. She enjoyed cooking and working in her garden with her flowers. She supported Law Enforcement and Veterans organizations. She enjoyed collecting almost anything. Most of all, she enjoyed life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Lackey; two brothers, Kermit Watson and Cecil Watson; and two sisters, Estelle Phillips and Frances Hall.
Survivors include a daughter, Marylin Hardin of Macon, Ga.; two sons, Charles Lackey and wife Shelia of Hickory and James Lee and wife Cynthia of Lenoir; two sisters, Shirley Reeder of Raleigh and Violet Huffman of Lenoir; a brother, Dennis Rich of Lenoir; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
A celebration of Edith’s life will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the Calvary Christian Church in Rhodhiss at 1 p.m. with Pastor Kelly Mathes officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. prior to the service.

John “Buck” Harrison Moore, 89, of Rhodhiss passed away Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Camelot Manor in Granite Falls.
Born Sept. 6, 1923, in Corbin, Ky., he was the son of the late William and Nancy Moore. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Moore; son, Raymond Lee Jr.; sisters, Ella Jenson, Rebecca Harrison; brothers, James, Robert, Malcolm, and Sylvester Moore; and also an additional seven brothers and sisters; one nephew, James Miller.
He is survived by niece, Blanche Harrison of Rhodhiss; nephews, Thomas Harrison of Rhodhiss and Malcolm Harrison of Lenoir; granddaughter, Stephanie Berryman of New Bern; daughter, Debra Adams of Valencia, Calif.; sons, Gary Lee of Pasadena, Calif., and Dennis Lee of Pasadena, Calif.; sisters, viva Spiteri of Minnesota, Blanche Guerra of Ohio, and Margie White of Florida; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Pauline Moore of Las Vegas, Nev.
The family will have a private gathering.

Terry Lee Smith, 53, of Wichita, Kan., died July 19, 2013, at his home after a brief illness. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Ebony Funeral Services of Lenoir is assisting the family.
Teresa Elaine Miller, 60, of Lenoir died Wednesday, July 24, 2013, at her residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.
Hazel Mae Ferguson Lipford, 76, of Lenoir, widow of John Spencer Lipford, died Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2013, at Laytown Memonite Brethren Church with the Rev. Fredrick Howell, the Rev. Roger Horton, the Rev. Juanita Melton, Minister Ray Dykes and the Rev. Terry Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the Lipford Cemetery in the Champion Mount Pleasant Community. The family will receive at Laytown Memonite Brethren Church from 1 until 2 prior to the service.
Mrs. Lipford was born in Wilkes County on Feb. 13, 1937, to Jessie James and Sarah Barnes Ferguson. She was a member of Thankful Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Lipford was preceded in death by two sisters, Minnie Howell and Grace Ferguson; one brother, Jessie Calvin Ferguson; one nephew, James Ferguson.
Hazel leaves a beautiful family to cherish lasting memories including her daughter, Anita Lipford Wilfong and husband Rev. James; a son, Bobby John Lipford of Lenoir; six grandchildren, Bobby John Lipford Jr., Jarvis Lipford, Spencer Wilfong and Sydney Wilfong, Lexi Carroll, and Cody Medley; five sister-in-laws, Helen Dickson and husband David of Lenoir, Cathy Sloan and Wanda Little of Ferguson; Hazel Norwood of North Wilkesboro; Oma Watkins of Roaring River; three brother-in-laws, James Lipford (Dorothy), Ray and Tony Lipford all of Ferguson; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends who all loved her dearly.
William Witherspoon Jr.
William Fred “Brother” Witherspoon Jr., 55, of Roy Dula Place, Lenoir, died Tuesday, July 23, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 3, 1957, in Caldwell County to the late William Fred Witherspoon Sr. and Charlotte Corina Bowers Witherspoon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a niece, Monique Williams.
Mr. Witherspoon was a hairdresser and of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include four sisters, Vanessa Washington of Florida, Grace Witherspoon, Veronica Whittington and husband David, and Zaila Wedderburn, all of Lenoir; goddaughter, Shynique Bowers; and a host of other family, friends and relatives.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 27, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Bishop R.C. Bryant. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends from noon till 1 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends of Mr. Witherspoon.
