Obituaries for Aug. 13, 2014
Margaret Gibson Gentry, 67, of Lenoir passed away on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2014, at her residence.
Mrs. Gentry was born on Dec. 10, 1946, in Caldwell County to the late Henry “Red” Gibson and Lucille Bolick Shuford. She worked for Broyhill Furniture as a Security Guard for many years and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She graduated from Caldwell Community and Technical Institute in 2008 with a degree in Early Childhood Development.
In addition to her parents Mrs. Gentry was preceded in death by two grandsons, Joshua Lee Shumaker and Marshall Shumaker, who was stillborn.
Those left to cherish the memory of Mrs. Gentry include her husband of 24 years, Larry Gentry; a son, Marvin Lee Shumaker and wife Angie of Granite Falls; a daughter, Sharon Smith of Lenoir; a brother, David Shuford of Hilderbran; a sister, Betty Sue Reid of Lenoir; and her grandchildren; Noah Shumaker, Tanner Shumaker, and Marcus Lee Smith, and a great-granddaughter, Alayna Shumaker.
A funeral service will be held Friday, Aug. 15, 2014, at 1 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Wayne White officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Ernest Lamar Shade, 86, of Lenoir passed away on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014, at his home. Mr. Shade was born in Caldwell County to the late Isaac and Mary Harper Shade. He was a retired Prudential Insurance agent. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Tammy Rochelle Shade, four brothers and one sister.
Mr. Shade served as a paramedic in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Wilberforce University of Ohio and American University in the District of Columbia.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 12 years, Ernestine Paschall-Shade of the home; his son, Kim Lamar Shade; grandsons Jarone Daughtridge, Christian Anderson, and Aaron Anderson; stepdaughter, Christina Rankin; and a host of other relatives and friends.
The celebration of his life will be held at Smith Memorial United Methodist Church on Aug. 14, 2014, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:55 p.m. prior to the service. The Rev. Charlie Rivens will be officiating.

Glenn William Winebarger, 82, of Grandview Circle, Lenoir, died Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at Carolina Medical Center. He was born May 14, 1932, in Ashe County to the late Millard Reese and Tessie Ray Winebarger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Bynum, Ambrose, Howard, Theeman, John, Chester and Walter; three sisters, Carrie Cardwell, Ellie Sanders and Bessie Hart; and a very special son-in-law, Timothy R. Williams.
Mr. Winebarger retired in 1995 from Nacco. He was a faithful member of East Flat Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Helen Byerly Winebarger of the home; two daughters, Glenda W. Woods and husband Mike of Lenoir, and Pam W. Williams of Greenville, S.C.; one sister, Opal Woodie and husband Dayton of Parlier; three grandchildren, Amy Woods, Matthew Woods and wife Tracy, and Andrew Woods and fiancé Brittney Gilbert; two great-grandchildren, Joseph and Alison Woods; two step-great-granddaughters, Zoey Nicholson and Raelyn McCall; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, at 4 p.m. at East Flat Baptist Church conducted by Pastor Billy Mitchell, Mike Gragg and Pastor Jim Lee. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. prior to the service at the church and at other times at the home of Amy Woods, 3001 Oaklawn Court, Lenoir, NC.
Serving as pallbearers will be Chad Abernathy, David Winebarger, Scott Winebarger, Chase Winebarger, Perry Woodie and Wayne Woodie.
Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of the church, Clint Vines and Bynum Winebarger.

Tom Baker Jr.
Thomas “Tom” Ralston Baker Jr., 58, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born in Caldwell County on Sept. 24, 1955, to Elda Johnson Baker and the late Thomas Ralston Baker Sr.
Tom was an avid reader, especially history, and he loved to sing. He enjoyed keeping a beautiful yard. He enjoyed watching his favorite football team, the Green Bay Packers, with his daughter, Caroline, and watching his favorite baseball team, the Detroit Tigers, with his son and father. Tom loved to go to the beach and see the ocean.
Other than his mother, he is survived by his children, Carrie Baker Bartley, Andrew Baker and wife Kelley, and Caroline Baker; sister, Candace Baker Poarch; grandchildren, Marcus Bumgardner and Hannah Baker; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends in the Family Life Center at Central Baptist Church on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014, from 6 until 7:30 p.m.

Donald Wayne Costner Sr. of Taylorsville passed away on August 7, 2014.
A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday August 13, 2014 at 6:00 P.M. at Cornerstone Cremation Celebration of Life Center. Military Honors will be provided by the North Carolina National Guard and Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
