Delma Bridges Sipe Thomas, 97, of Collettsville died Friday, April 12, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. She was born in Burke County on July 14, 1915, daughter of the late Romney Bridges and Nikie Childers Bridges. Delma loved being outdoors, loved flowers and was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David (D.A.) Alexander Sipe and a son, Robert Lee Sipe. Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Patricia Kidder of Collettsville; two granddaughters, Kandi Sipe Murphy and Dee Sipe Sawchuck; and four great-grandsons.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 16, at Valdese Family Funeral Care Chapel with the Rev. Steve Butler officiating. Interment will follow in the Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Connelly Springs.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service hour at the funeral home.

Annie Mae Shatley Hollar, 68, of Lenoir passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013, at Blowing Rock Hospital. Born March 13, 1945, in Caldwell County, she was the daughter of the late Mark Columbus Shatley and Lucy Victoria Edmisten Shatley.
Mrs. Hollar was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dale Calvin Hollar; and four brothers, Sherman, Bruce, Jerry and Gordon Shatley; and one sister, Emma Jean Shatley Wate.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Elizabeth Hollar Crump of Collettesville and Angel Hollar Mahaffey of Mulberry; sisters, Shirley Shatley Calloway and husband Ronald of Lenoir, and Bessie Shatley Parson and husband Allen of Lenoir; and five grandchildren, Matt Crump, Ethan Crump, Dalton Crump, Thomas Mahaffey and John Mahaffey.
The family received friends on Monday, April 15, at Pendry’s Funeral Home.
The funeral service honoring Mrs. Hollar will be Tuesday, April 16, at 3 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Roger Cox officiating. Burial will follow at Littlejohn United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Walter Ernest McKinney, 72, of Patterson passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013, at his residence. Mr. McKinney was born in Avery County to the late Carl McKinney and June Johnson McKinney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Carolyn Ann McKinney, and his brothers, Lester and Auldy McKinney.
He was retired from Sealed Air Corporation after 38 years of service and was a member of Harper’s Chapel United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Clark McKinney; his son, Bobby Allen McKinney and wife Sharon of Lenoir; his daughters, Kathleen McKinney Martin of Lenoir, Shirley McKinney Swanson and husband Joel of Lenoir, and Crystal McKinney of Abingdon, Va.; his brothers, Orlando, Dewayne, Ronnieand Glenn McKinney; his sisters, Alma Buchanan, Paulette Hughes and Claudette Mitchell; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, April 17, at 4 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Phillip Setzer and Elder Billy Joe Lipford officiating. Burial will followat Harper’s Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home prior to the service Wednesday at 3 p.m. Serving as pallbearers will be Bobby Martin, Coty McKinney, Joel Swanson, Patrick Swanson, Joey Lipford and Michael Genwright. Doris Elise Blackburn Shew, 71, of Lenoir passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice in Lenoir.
Born July 28, 1941, in Wilkes County, Doris was a daughter of the late Percy and Myrtle Reavis Blackburn. She was a Sunday School teacher at Exodus Baptist Church, where her husband is Pastor and she was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Blackburn.
Survivors include her husband of almost 49 years, the Rev. James Hubert Shew of the home; her children, Pam Barlow and husband Scott, Ricky Shew and wife Tammy, and stepdaughter Teresa Smith and husband Robin; seven sisters, Janet Olson, Wanda Bauguess, Elizabeth Shumate, Kay Roland, Patricia Leonard, Jewel Kearns and Jane Riddle; one brother, Cleon Blackburn; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives.
A celebration of Doris’ life will be held on Wednesday, April 17, at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at 1 p.m. with Rick Shew, Pastor Jerry Woodie, and the Rev. Landon Rice officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir.
The family will receive friends at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
