Jerry Phillips, 62, of Station Road, Lenoir, passed away Thursday morning, April l8, 2013, in Lenoir. Born Sept. 8, 1950, in Watauga County, he was a son of Dayton and Ella Norris Phillips.

Jerry is survived by his 12 brothers and sisters, Beulah Rector of Lenoir, Jean Pharr and husband Lawrence of Statesville, Bill Phillips and wife Martha of Zionville, Anne Wood and husband Carlton of Harrisburg, Joe Phillips and wife Fran of Zionville, Ruby Pennell and husband Morris, Barbara McCall and husband Jerry, and Doris Carolyn Phillips, all of Lenoir, Charles Phillips of Granite Falls, Robert Phillips and wife Etheleen, "twin" brother Larry Phillips, and Mike Phillips and wife Janice all of Lenoir, and Irene Cummings and husband Francis of Morganton. A number of nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Norris.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 20, at 2 o’clock, at the Mountain Dale Baptist Church in the Bethel community, officiated by the Rev. Eric Cornett and the Rev. Tim Pierce. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at Mountain Dale Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Mountain Dale Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Travis Cornett, 654 White Laurel Lane, Boone, NC 28607, or the Caldwell County Hospice, 902 Kirkwood St., Lenoir, NC 28645.

The family will be at the home of a sister, Carolyn Phillips, 4071 Hartland Road in Lenoir.

Nancy Andrews

Nancy Smith Andrews, 66, of Granite Falls passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 20,  at Bass-Smith Granite Chapel with the Rev. Joel Cook officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Bass-Smith Granite is serving the family.

Josephine Smyth

Josephine Singleton Smyth, 81, of Clearwater, Fla., passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Valdese General Hospital.

Services for Mrs. Smyth will be private.

Betty Hoffman

Betty Spencer Hoffman, 89, of Lenoir passed away Friday, April 19, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Hoffman was born in Auburn, Ala., to the late Joe C. Spencer and Stella Hayes Spencer.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Adam Jasper Hoffman; a daughter, Mary Hoffman; and her brothers, John Hayes Spencer and Joe Frank Spencer.

She was co-owner of Hoffman Paving Company and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Jasper Hoffman of Lenoir, David Hoffman and wife Martha of Lenoir, and Daniel Hoffman of Lenoir; a daughter, Emilie Hoffman of Boone; her grandchildren, Angela McCloy, Joseph Hoffman, Jenny Coffey and Mary Lindsay Bolick; and a great-grandson, Declan McCloy.

A funeral service will be held Monday, April 22, at 3 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Robert Livingston officiating.

Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Monday at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Jasper Hoffman, David Hoffman, Daniel Hoffman, Joseph Hoffman, Patrick McCloy and Clint Coffey.

The family requests that memorials be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, NC 28645.

Ethel Thomas

Ethel Mae Howell Thomas, 93, of  Lenoir passed away Wednesday April 17, 2013.

Services will be held Sunday, April 21, at 2:30 p.m. at E.R. McGimpsey, Sr. Memorial Chapel. The family will receive from 2 to 2:25 p.m. A private burial will follow.
