George Annis

George William Annis, 59, a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2013. Mr. Annis was born in Wayne County, Mich., on July 17, 1953, and was a son of the late George Herman Annis and Agnes Mae Campau Annis. George was an avid golfer and was of the Catholic faith.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kathy Cox Annis of the home; children, Carson Annis and wife Brittany of Groton, Conn., and Kala Annis Leyva and husband Alfred of Fort Hood, Texas; grandchildren, Zane Sanders and Chance Annis; and George’s siblings, Gayle Brown and husband Alan of Morganton, and Keith Annis and wife Susan of Newnan, Ga.

The Funeral Mass will be held at noon Wednesday, Feb. 27, at St. Charles Catholic Borromeo Church with Father Kenneth Whittington officiating.  The family will receive friends at the church for one hour prior to the service.

Nelda Franklin

Nelda Powell Franklin, 88, of Lenoir died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013.  Born in Burke County on Dec. 31, 1924, she was a daughter of the late James W. “Bud” Powell and Mary McGalliard Powell. Nelda was a member of Drexel Church of Christ. She retired from Drexel Knitting Mills with over 40 years of service to the company. Nelda was an avid bird watcher, loved working in her flower garden and enjoyed embroidery.

A devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Nelda is survived by her children, Johnny Lee Franklin, Jr. and wife Dolly of Lenoir, Allen Franklin and wife Lori of Drexel, Dorothy Lowman and husband Elbert of Connelly Springs, Linda Absher of Morganton, and Carolyn Franklin of Valdese; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Byrd and husband Herbert of Redding, Calif.

In addition to her parents, Nelda was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Lee Franklin Sr.; a daughter, Ruby Franklin Jarrett; and two brothers, Raymond and Keith Powell.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home with the Rev. John Barnhardt and Bishop John Smiley officiating. Burial will follow in Burke Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence of Linda Absher.

Patsy Greer

Patsy Pearson Greer, 66, of Rocky Road, Lenoir, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson. She was born July 17, 1946, in Burke County to the late Earl and Annie Wilson Pearson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Willie Morrison Jr.; two brothers-in-law, Harold Greer and Hub Greer; and two sisters-in-law, Lennis Eller and Avis Suddreth.

Mrs. Greer was a seamstress at Cajah Mountain Hosiery and was a member of Indian Hills Baptist Church. She was also a graduate of Salem High School in Morganton.

Survivors include her husband, Doug Greer of the home; one sister, Barbara Earl and husband Bobby of Lawndale; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Bryan Davis and the Rev. J.B. Crouse. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Steven Earl, Michael Earl, Jeffery Earl, Calvin Morrison, Dean Allman and Danny Powell.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Tommy Coffey, David Coffey, Ron Bowman and Havard Oliver.

Johnny Rhoney

John E. Rhoney, 75, died Feb. 23, 2013. He was born on Aug. 21, 1937, in Burke County.

He is survived by his wife, Gayle; daughter, Stefanie Vernon and husband Michael; nephews, Jason and Matt Keever; brother- and sister-in-laws, Michael Keever and wife Linda, Brent Keever and wife Jean, and Rick Keever; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. at Sandy Ridge Baptist Church. The family will receive friends following the service.

Patricia Pilkenton

Patricia “Pat” Lori Pilkenton, 83, passed away on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 at Shaire Center. Mrs. Pilkenton was born in Caldwell County on Oct. 28, 1929, to the late W.A. Story and Mary Bradshaw Story. She was married to Don Pilkenton of the residence for 62 years.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her brothers, Charley, Dillard, Ernest, Bill and Van Story; and sisters, Maria Story, Lucille Simmons, Ollie Story and Juanita Saunders.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, Richard Douglas “Doug” Pilkenton and wife Teresa of Lenoir; grandson, Darian Pilkenton; sisters, JoAnn Thomas and husband Garland of Salisbury, and Maggie Miller of Lenoir; and several special nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mrs. Pilkenton’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Chuck Brawley officiating. Entombment will take place immediately following the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Feb. 27, from 1 until 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service.

The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to College Avenue Baptist Church, 1201 College Ave. SW., Lenoir, NC 28645.

William Smith

William Hines Smith, 83, of Lenoir died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir. He was born Dec. 27, 1929, in Greensboro to the late Thomas William and Sarah Kate Banner Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Crowell and Gertrude Daughtry.

Mr. Smith was retired from Hunt Wesson Foods/ConAgra and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was one of the founding members of Caldwell Men’s Chorus and was the treasurer. He also was a tutor for the GED program, served on the board for Bethel Colony, and was a United States Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Lavina M. Smith of the home; one son, Bryan Smith and wife Jere' of Las Vegas, Nev.; two daughters, Daryl Smith of North Fork, Calif., and Delia Smith of Riverside, Calif.; two brothers, Banner Smith and wife Jean of Tucker, Ga., and Kennett Smith and wife Marjorie of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Lenoir conducted by the Rev. Robert F. Hinman and Dr. Parker T. Williamson.

The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
