Edith Davis

Edith Irene West Davis, 97, of Calico Road, Lenoir, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at the residence. She was born Aug. 24, 1915, in Watauga County to the late Frank and Flossie Cook Green. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by first husband John Ernest West; second husband Worth Fulton Davis; son James Martin West; brother, George Green; son-in-law, Bruce Douglas Drum; and an infant son.

Mrs. Davis was retired from Caldwell County Schools, where she worked in the cafeteria. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include son Bobby A. West and wife Marie of Lenoir; daughters, Barbara Drum, and Jean Goble and husband Dennis, both of Lenoir; stepdaughter, Joyce Davis and Alan Cutter; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, Feb. 28, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Blowing Rock conducted by the Rev. Steven O. Walsh.

Hayden White

Hayden Glen White, 76, of Crest Place, Lenoir, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013, at the residence. He was born Nov. 8, 1936, in Caldwell County to the late William C. and Nannie Katherine Roberts White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Thomas Roberts and John Franklin White.

Mr. White was retired from Regal Manufacturing and was a member of Bethel Advent Christian Church. He was a United States Army Veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Kanupp White of the home; one son, Harvey L. Lawing and wife Yvonne of Richmond, Va.; one daughter, Lynn Weller and husband Jeff of Leicester; one brother, Jerry White of Granite Falls; one sister, Sharon White of Lenoir; three grandchildren, Sean Ostwalt, Alisha King and Ryan Hennessee; and two great-grandchildren, Levi Ostwalt and Teigan Ostwalt.

Graveside services will be held Friday, March 1, at 11:30 a.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir conducted by the Rev. Allen Boleick.

The family will received friends from 10 to 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

April McKenzie

April Shumway McKenzie died on Feb. 25, 2013, in Atlanta, Ga. She was born in Lenoir on April 18, 1940, to Annie Beish Shumway and Merlin Henderson Shumway (who both worked at the Lenoir News-Topic in the '40s and '50s).

She is survived by her husband, Paul McKenzie; her daughter, Becky Hollaway; and her sons, Mike Hollaway, and Todd Hollaway and wife Susy; and their seven children and one grandchild. She is also survived by her three stepchildren. She was a devoted spouse and mother with a passion and deep love for her family and animals. She and Paul retired to Jasper, Ga., after years of running a successful dry cleaning business.
