Mrs. Margaret Magdalene Laxton Hartley, 87, passed away on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Blowing Rock Extended Care. She was born in Caldwell County on September 23, 1925, to the late Homer Laxton and Ola Pennell Laxton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Brenda Sue Clement and her sisters, Betty Sue Laxton and Gwendolyn Laxton Coffey.
She is survived by her sons, Kyle Clement and wife, Nancy of Lenoir; Roger Clement and wife Brenda of Statesville; Robert Clement and wife Debbie of Lenoir; daughters Kay Vandiver of Pffaftown and Nan Harris and husband Marty of Lenoir; brothers, Garland Laxton and wife Ann of Lenoir; Douglas Laxton and wife JoAnn of Hudson; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Mrs. Hartley’s life will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Blue Ridge Memorial Park with Pastor Gurney Robbins officiating.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m., until noon in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service.

Darrell Ervin Canterbury, 48, of Granite Falls passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Frye Regional Medical Center.
He was born October 1, 1964 in Princeton, W. Va., to the late Howard and Gladys Hodge Canterbury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Robbie Canterbury.
Survivors include a son, Joey Canterbury of Granite Falls; a daughter, Amy Canterbury Bryant of Granite Falls; a special niece, Jamie Shull of Granite Falls; a special sister-in-law, Peggy Canterbury of Granite Falls; five grandchildren, Haylie Carver, Sarah Heavner, Nicholas Burch, Kyndal Bryant and Heaven Bryant. He was also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 26, 2013 at Bass-Smith Granite Chapel with the Rev. Don Ingle officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Anthony Douglas “Doug” Canter, 57, of Lenoir passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Canter was born in Caldwell County to the late Odell A. Canter and Helen Miladeen Watson Shoemake. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marines and of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his brother, Alan D. Canter of Hickory; his sisters Darlene Clark and husband Rick of Lenoir, Donna McCall and husband Tommy of Hudson and Sandra “Sam” Millwood of Lincolnton.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, January 27, 2013, in Pendry’s Chapel. Burial will follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home one hour prior to the service.
Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Clark, Bradley Triplett, Brandon Triplett, Greg Canter, Steven Killian and Christopher Watson. Honorary pallbearers will be Josh Hall, Seth Critcher, Cody Watson, Dustin Clark and Dalton Clark.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Disabled American Veterans.
