Linda Priddy

Linda Steele Priddy, 59, of Lenoir passed away on April 18, 2014, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Born May 30, 1954, in Caldwell County, Linda was the daughter of Louise Coffey Steele and the late Robert Haywood Steele. Linda was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lenoir. She had worked at the Robbins Medical Center for 39 years. Her hobby was her work. She will be remembered for loving the doctors and people she worked with. She also enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading and bird watching. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert and Eula Steele and Monroe and Dovie Jane Coffey.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 35 years, Charles O. Priddy of Lenoir; two sons, Christopher C. Priddy, partner Jeremy Huffman, of Asheville and Kevin S. Priddy, son Greyson Steele Priddy, of Lenoir; and a brother and sister-in-law, Brian R. Steele, wife Jackie, of Granite Falls.

A funeral service for Linda will be Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the First Baptist Church of Lenoir at 11:30 a.m. with Philip Priddy and Thomas Hinton officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church.

Karl Schmertzler

Karl George Schmertzler, 83 of Hickory passed away surrounded by his family. He was a proud Air Force Veteran of the Korean War and a lifelong member of American Legion in Elkins, W.Va. He loved and respected both men and women in uniform, the protectors of our country. Was one of the original founders of the Elkins, W.Va., Pilot Club.

Mr. Schmertzler was born April 28, 1930, in Elkins, W.Va. He was the youngest of four sons born to Aaron and Violet Rosalyn Schmertzler. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Patricia Hartsfield Schmertzler. He was the beloved father of Karl Schmertizler and wife Karen, Will Schmertzler and wife Judy, Diana Jones and husband Chuck, and Ronnie von Drehle and husband Raymond. Other survivors include grandchildren, Brad Schmertzler, Julia Schmertzler, Jonathan Schmertzler and wife Erin, Alicia Schmertzler, Kathryn Jones, Amanda Jones, Morgan Cameron and husband Spencer, Brett von Drehle and wife Kim and Travis von Drehle. Great-grandchildren include Kyler Williams, Emma Erikson, and Liam von Drehle. He lived a wonderful life, loved his family, the ones we married and most of all, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Every life he touched was more joyful knowing him. Services will be in Topsail, N.C., a private family service. Ray Corpening

Ray C. Corpening, 72, of Lenoir passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir. Born July 3, 1941, in Caldwell County, Mr. Corpening was a son of the late James Nathaniel and Mabel Odessa Propst Corpening.

Mr. Corpening had worked as a truck driver with Hickory Construction Company. He never met a stranger and was known to have a heart that was bigger than himself. He was like a big brother to many of his nieces and nephews and always was jovial and full of life. He enjoyed his '57 Chevy and loved all types of animals.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Rae Antoinette Corpening, and a brother, James Nathaniel Corpening Jr.

He is survived by a daughter, Brenda C. Smith and husband Lakel of Upper Marlboro, Md.; one brother, Frederick Corpening and wife DeQuincy of Wilmington, Del.; four sisters, Dorothy Kay Corpening of Washington, D.C., Shirley Mae Horton of Upper Marlboro, Md., Albertine Violet Johnson and husband James of Lenoir, and Mabel Odessa Crisp and husband Joseph of New Jersey; four grandchildren, Tyshawn Thomas, Lakel Smith, Kendra Medley, Alexander Smith and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

A celebration of Mr. Corpening’s life will be held at 12 noon, Saturday, April 26, 2014, in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with the Rev. James Wilfong and the Rev. Jimmy Norwood officiating.

The family will receive friends from 11 until 12 on Saturday, one hour prior to the service.

Linda Carole Greene Tramble, 70, of Granite Falls passed away on Wednesday April 23, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care.
