Jack Kenneth Bowman, 75, of Lenoir died July 25, 2013. A service will be held Wednesday, July 31, at Oak Ridge Baptist Church, 7449 Oak Ridge Church Road, Connelly Springs. The family will receive friends 5-6 p.m. the same day at the church.
Connie Sue Courtner, 53, of Hudson passed away July 26, 2013. She was born Jan. 14, 1960, to Edith Miller Sluder and the late William Frank Miller.

Darrell David Howell, 53, passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2013, at Select Specialty Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was born in Caldwell County on June 28, 1960, to Mary Williams Howell of Lenoir and the late James Edward Howell.
As a child Darrell was selected as an Easter Seal child. He loved watching football games, fishing and taking pictures.
In addition to his father he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edward and Betty Connor Howell, Lonnie Wilson Williams and Clancy Mae Dula Williams; brother, Kenneth Lynn Howell; and sister, Patsy Vermae Howell.
Other than his mother, he is survived by his brothers, Jerry Edward Howell and wife Ruby of Hudson; Gerald Edward Howell of Hamilton, Ohio; nephew, David Dwayne Friesland and wife Judy of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; niece, Cynthia Renee Howell of Hickory; and great-niece, Jessica Tiara Friesland of Roan Mountain, Tenn.
A celebration of Darrell’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tim Suter and the Rev. Randall Honeycutt officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Edward Nelson, Donald Anderson, Josh Blevins, Ray Bowman, Matthew McGuire, Derek Pope and Daniel Whitt.
The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 prior to the service.

Ella Mae Beach Woodie, 90, of Morganton went home to be with her Savior and family who passed before, on Sunday, July 28, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Kirkwood.
Born April 22, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Lillard Beach and Sophronia Day Beach.
She was a homemaker and a faithful member of East Flat Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 55 years, Leonard L. Woodie; son, Clifton Woodie; daughter Lena Setzer; son-in-law Ted Setzer; brothers, Claude Beach, Earl Beach, and Glenn Beach; sister, Pearl South; and a great-grandson, Clifton Thomas Woodie.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Evangeline “Vangie” McGee and husband Lawrence of Lenoir, Janice Caraway and husband Lawrence, and Kay Rhodes and fiancé Jobe Harbison, all of Morganton. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Woodie will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at East Flat Baptist Church at 4 p.m., with Dr. Claude Suddreth, the Rev. Brooks Kirby and the Rev. Mike Gragg officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service.
Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Wally Caraway, Chris Caraway, Rick Setzer, Bradley Woodie, Shane Rhodes, and Chad Rhodes.

Rickey James Garland, 59, of Lenoir died July 27, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.
Mr. Garland was born in Mitchell County on July 28, 1953, and spent his early years in Bakersville with his beloved grandparents, Len and Alice Burleson. Mr. Garland enjoyed several careers in his life: He was a long-haul truck driver, a millwright, and a mechanic. He had a great sense of humor and a quick wit, and liked to affectionately tease his family. He kept an immaculate garage, and loved collecting and restoring old cars. He was a member of the Route 66 car club for many years. He loved animals and often took in abandoned cats and dogs. He will be greatly missed by his Jack Russell terrier, Ozzie. But what he loved most was being a Paw-Paw. He is survived by six beautiful grandchildren who meant the world to him: Stacie, Cara, Emma, Sadie, Riley, and Cooper.
Mr. Garland is also survived by his wife of 39 years, Katie Dugger Garland of Lenoir; son, Rickey Garland and his wife, Beth, of Hampstead; daughter Rebecca Harris and her husband, Brandon, of Hildebran; uncle JD Burleson of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; and aunt Sue Honeycutt of Buladean. In addition to his grandparents, he is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Louise Slagle.
The visitation will be held on July 30 at Evans Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. with the Revs. Doug Honeycutt, Tony Bowman, and Clyde Bumgarner officiating at the service immediately following. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at the Harmon Family Cemetery.

Maude Dishman Ward, 90, of Granite Falls passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at The Shaire Center of Lenoir.
She was born Nov. 18, 1922, in Watauga County to the late Willard V. Dishman and Janie Greene Dishman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lee W. Ward.
Mrs. Ward was a member of Concord Baptist Church and was a retired Teacher’s Assistant with Caldwell County Schools.
Survivors include her son, David Ward of Granite Falls; her daughter, Karen Farthing of Boone; a brother, Henry Dishman of Boone; and two sisters, Mabel Ward and Leta Mae Edminsten, both of Boone; three grandchildren, Jenna Ward, Josh Brown and his wife, Shannon Poole Brown, and Matthew Brown; and two great-grandchildren, Devin and Jarred Brown.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at Bass-Smith Granite Chapel with the Rev. Tom McDonald officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to services from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m.

Perry Ray Hawkins, 89, died Monday, July 29, 2013, at Catawba Regional Hospice Home. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Catawba Funerals and Cremations. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends noon-1 p.m. at the funeral home.
Judy Kay Benfield, 69, of Hudson passed away on Sunday, July 28, 2013, at her home.
Born on Nov. 24, 1943, in Caldwell County, Judy was a daughter of the late Ray Edward and Ennis Pierce Allen. She was Methodist by faith and was a talented artist. She had a green thumb and enjoyed gardening and her flowers and bushes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel Ray Allen.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Robert Douglas Benfield of the home; a daughter, Shannon Yvonne Woodruff; a son, Robert Douglas Benfield II; four grandchildren, Robert Benfield III, Alyssa Benfield, Jonathan Benfield and Austin Woodruff; Judy is also survived by numerous other relatives.
A celebration of Judy’ life will be held on Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service with Chaplain Steve Butler officiating. Interment will follow the service in the Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir. Serving as pallbearers will be Austin Woodruff, Joel Barlowe, Tommy Watson, Felix Hart, Robert Benfield III, Jonathan Benfield and Lester Perry.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Kenneth Alton Powell, M.D., 78, of Rutherford College passed away on Friday, July 26, 2013, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living Center in Hendersonville following a period of declining health.
Dr. Powell was born on Dec. 23, 1934, in Mecklenburg County to the late Floyd J. Powell and Clara S. Powell. He was a United States Army Veteran, was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and received his medical degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine. Ken opened a family practice office 50 years ago across from Valdese General Hospital, after his military service. He was a hometown doctor who delivered babies and made house calls for many years. After he retired, he enjoyed many years of flying, traveling and enjoying life.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his son, Kenneth A. Powell Jr. and his brother, Douglas Powell.
Survivors include his wife, Marcia Hendrix Powell of the home; his daughter, Sandy Searson of Drexel; and his granddaughter, Allie Searson of Savannah, Ga.
A Graveside Service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 29, at the Waldensian Presbyterian Church Cemetery, followed by a Memorial Service at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary at Waldensian Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Mike Sears officiating.
In lieu of receiving friends, celebrate life in honor of Dr. Powell.

Mack Calvin Edmisten, 89, of Green Valley Place in Lenoir died Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Lenoir. He was born Jan. 16, 1924, in Caldwell County to the late W. Roby Edmisten and Emma R. Shoemake Edmisten. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Warren Edmisten; brothers, William H. “Pete” Edmisten, Woodrow W. Edmisten, B. Shuford Edmisten, Glen Edmisten, Howard B. “Mose” Edmisten, James W. Edmisten, R. Cody Edmisten; sisters, Mae Green, Lucy Shatley, Florence McNeely and Belle Edmisten.
Mr. Edmisten was a retired Assistant Fire Chief for the Lenoir Fire Department, served as chief of Valmead Fire Department for 12 years, and was instrumental in organizing this fire department. He was a lifelong member of Lenoir Community Church, where he served as a deacon, collector and trustee. He was also a United States World War II Army Veteran.
Survivors include his son, Mack W. “Buddy” Edmisten and wife Janet of Lenoir; one daughter, Marlene Edmisten Setzer and husband Tony of Lenoir; grandchildren, Amy Setzer Tuttle, Angela Setzer White, Beth Setzer Miller, Mark Edmisten and Kris Edmisten; and nine great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, July 30, at 11 a.m. at Lenoir Community Church conducted by Pastor Daniel McGee. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the church.
Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Edmisten’s grandsons and great-grandsons.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Lenoir Fire Department, Valmead Fire Department and retirees.
