Harold Carson

Harold Len Carson, 80, of Lenoir passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013, in the Charles George Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Asheville. Born Aug. 30, 1932, in Landenberg, Penn., he was a son of the late Jacob Brite and Ida Bare Carson.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Lisa McCall.

Mr. Carson was a U.S. Army veteran serving during the Korean Conflict. He was a self-employed mechanic and attended Union Baptist Church. He was an honest man and enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by his wife, Nelma McCall of the home; five children, Lynn VanDyke and husband John of Maryland, Kathryn Mitchem and husband Paul of Texas, Jeffery Carson and wife Gail of Florida, Wesley McCall of Lenoir and Lisa McCall of Lenoir. He is also survived by two brothers, Jacob Carson of Maryland, and Donald Carson and wife Barbara of Florida; grandchildren, Amanda Horn and husband Andrew of Maryland, Kaitlyn Love and husband Dustin of Texas, Emma McCall and Erin McCall, both of Lenoir; and great-grandchildren, Austin Horn and Ava Horn, both of Maryland and Kaylee Love of Texas.

A celebration of Mr. Carson’s life will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Myron Davis officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with full Military Honors.

Pallbearers will be: Wesley McCall, Floyd Reid Jr., Terry Reid, Patrick McNeil, Greg White and Tommy McLean.

The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6 until 7:30 at Evans Funeral Service in Lenoir.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be made to Union Baptist Church, 4595 Union Baptist Church Road, Lenoir, North Carolina 28645.

Betty McMillon

Betty Moore McMillon, 74, of Vine Street, Lenoir, died Monday, July 29, 2013, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Oct. 10, 1938, in Caldwell County to Kathleen Lamberth Moore of Lenoir and the late Otis F. Moore. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Hardy “Buddy” Moore, and brother-in-law, Roger Tolbert.

Ms. McMillon was a retired dispatcher for Newton Transportation and was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed sewing, worked at Lowe's Hardware and Lenoir Chair Company. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandson Keaton.

Survivors in addition to her mother include two sons, Keith McMillon and wife Lisa of Lenoir, and Eric McMillon and significant other Winfield Lail of Hickory; sisters, Joanne Carpenter and husband Johnny of Hudson, and Virginia Tolbert of Lenoir; sister-in-law, Mildred Sullivan Moore of Lenoir; and grandson, Keaton McMillon.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Raymond Spann. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Barry Moore, Jeff Moore, John Moore, Joey Moore and Jim Moore.

Honorary pallbearer will be Keaton McMillon.

Clare Coffey

Clare Lawrence Coffey, 71, of Hudson passed away on Monday, July 29, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

She was born July 27, 1942, in Hanover, Penn., to the late Francis Lawrence and Mary Elizabeth Lookenbill Lawrence. Clare is also preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Coffey; one son, Jeffery Wade Coffey; and one brother, Robert Lawrence.

She was a retired secretary and of the Catholic faith.

Mrs. Coffey is survived by her three sons, Andrew Coffey, and Brian Coffey and wife Nora, both of Hudson, and Scott Coffey of Lenoir; two brothers, Sam Lawrence and Bill Lawrence, both of Hanover, Penn.; three sisters, Angela Miller of Hanover, Penn., Geraldine Carbough of McSherrystown, Penn., and Cheryl Mauck of Mayo, Md.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Mrs. Coffey will be held on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at Pendry’s Chapel at 2 p.m., with Deacon Stephen Picket officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Pendry’s Funeral Home.
