Hazel Arnette

Hazel M. Arnette, 92, of Lenoir went to meet the Lord Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. She was born July 14, 1921 in Watauga County to the late Bynum Moore and Ida Parlier Moore.

Mrs. Arnette was a graduate from Bethel High School in Sugar Grove and moved to Caldwell County and retired from American Effird Mills early in her life and then she was a homemaker. She loved working outdoors in her yard and especially in her flowers. She also loved quilting.

Mrs. Arnette was a member of First Baptist Church of Whitnel, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and at the age of 92 was still teaching. She was a faithful servant to her Lord Jesus Christ.

She is also preceded in death by her husband Ray D. Arnette whom she was married to for 65 years, brothers Ivey Moore (wife Ada), Clyde Moore (wife Gladys) and Dana Moore (wife Hazel), also four grandchildren, Timothy Max Woods, James Terrell (Jimmy) Andrews, one infant grandson and one infant granddaughter.

Those left to cherish her memories are her children Geraldine Woods (husband Max) of Lenoir, Jean Andrews of Lenoir, Shirley Austin (husband Jerry) of Hudson, Glenda Bolick (husband Dale) of Huntersville; her siblings Lewis Moore (wife Violet), Blanche Hamm, Bertha Greene ( husband Willard), Betty Greene ( husband Howard) all of Lenoir; grandchildren Sharon Alley (husband Tim) of Hudson, Revonda Winkler (husband Greg), Beth Prestwood ( husband Hoss) both of Lenoir, Ryan Bolick (wife Kristin) of Davidson, Chris Austin (wife Bambi) of Lenoir, T.J. Austin of Brooklyn, N.Y., Keri Magana (husband Kiko) of Seattle, Wash.; great grandchildren Shannon Andrews (husband Michael) of Concord, Amber Alley of Lenoir, Abby Prestwood and Cain Prestwood of Lenoir, David Alley of Hudson, Elizabeth Bolick and Charlotte Bolick of Davidson and Olivia Austin of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends Sunday Aug. 4, 2013 from 2 to 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Whitnel.

Funeral services will follow the receiving at 3 p.m. at the church with Reverend Stuart White, Reverend Sam Craven and Reverend Don Ingle officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Lenoir Park for the loving care they gave our mom and our sister, and also to Caldwell Hospice for their special doctors, nurses and staff for helping to comfort our loved one.

Serving as pallbearers will be Mrs. Arnette’s grandsons.

Evon Summerlin

Evon Elaine Summerlin, 61, of Moonbeam Lane, Lenoir, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. She was born May 3, 1952, in Caldwell County to the late Vaughn R. and Erna McCrary Summerlin.

Ms. Summerlin was a retired Registered Nurse for Caldwell Memorial Hospital. She was a member of College Avenue Baptist Church. She was also a member of the Eastern Star, Hickory Chapter 155.

She is survived by numerous cousins.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Blue Ridge Memorial Park conducted by Dr. Charles R. Brawley.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:45 p.m. prior to the graveside at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home.

Leman Underdown

William Leman Underdown, 90, of Lenoir was called home by his heavenly Father on Friday, Aug. 2, 2013, following an extended period of declining health.

Leman was born Oct. 10, 1922, in Lenoir to the late Milton A. and Vernie Mae Underdown. He is preceded in death by his lifelong sweetheart, the late Virginia Bolick Underdown. He is also preceded in death by his brother Jack A. Underdown of Elkin; his sister Mary Frances Ervin of Charlotte; and his son-in-law George D. Wooldridge.

He attended Lenoir High School, Clevenger Business College, and Asbury College. Leman met and married his first and only love, Virginia Bolick of Rutherford College. They were married for 67 beautiful years.

He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the European theatre in the 737th Tank Battalion under Gen. George Patton. Leman designed, owned, and operated Fairway Supermarkets and Fairway Shopping Centers with his business partner, Coit Barber, for 46 years. He originally owned and operated the Fairway Coin Laundry. He designed and developed Fairway Acres. He served on the Board of three banks: Bank of Granite, Mutual Savings and Loan, and SunTrust Bank.

Leman was a very active member of West Lenoir Baptist Church. He served the Lord faithfully throughout his lifetime. He also served his Savior, Jesus Christ, by utilizing his God-given talents to design the various buildings on his Church campus.

He survived by his daughter Linda Underdown Weaver and husband Dr. David E. Weaver of Greer, S.C., his daughter Catherine Underdown Wooldridge of Rutherford College, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Benjamin A. Weaver and wife Melissa, and their son, Mark Benjamin, of Greer, S.C.; Joseph R. Weaver and wife Amanda, and their daughters, Morgan and Olivia, of Simpsonville, S.C.; and Laura Katherine Weaver Mendez and husband Gionnathon, and their daughter, Anna Grace, of Greer, S.C.

Leman was a great man of faith, was an inspiration to many and was the heart of his family. He was admired and loved by all who knew him. He will be missed by many.

Evans Funeral Service of Lenoir will be assisting the family with the funeral arrangements. The service will be held at West Lenoir Baptist Church on Sunday Aug. 4, 2013, at 3 p.m. The family will be receiving friends prior to the actual service between the hours of 2 and 3 p.m. Interment with full military rites will follow the service at Abernathy Memorial United Methodist Church Cemetery in Rutherford College. The Rev. Rick Safriet, the Rev. Hoss Moore and the Rev. Sarah Underwood will preside.

Margaret Russ

Margaret Roseann Russ, 73, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013, at Mission Hospital in Asheville. Mrs. Russ was born in Ashe County on Oct. 30, 1939, to the late Chester Eldrith and Maude Killian Eldrith.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Daniel (Junior) Russ Jr.; five brothers, Bill Eldrith, Gary Eldrith, Larry Eldrith, Tob Eldrith, and Lavon Eldrith; and sister, Flora Vines Lavon Eldrith.

She is survived by two daughters, Jan Phillips and husband Robert Phillips Jr. of Hudson, and Dorine Russ and J.C. Maxey of Catawba; sons, Daniel Russ III (Danny) and Gena Barnes of Hudson, and Eddie Hulin and wife Donna of West Jefferson; five grandsons, Ricky Watson Jr., Daniel Russ IV, Tyler Russ, James Cody Russ, and Anthony Hulin; and one granddaughter, Amber Danielle Russ. She held the key to her heart two adopted granddaughters, Brittney Moody Raby and Sarah Lynn Moody; two great-grandchildren, Blake and Coty Hulin; and is survived by numerous nieces and nephews; two brothers; Joseph Eldrith and Earl Eldrith; three sisters, Pearl McGhinnis, Jean Combs, and Sherry (Judy) Osborne; her aunts Jewel Dunn, and Louise Moses; and very dear friend Elsie Reece.

A celebration of Mrs. Russ’ life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Sunday, Aug. 4, 2013, at 2 p.m. Entombment will take place immediately following the service at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 prior to the service.
