Lucas Smith

Lucas Andrew Smith, 16, of Lenoir passed away suddenly Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014.

Born June 19, 1997, he was the son of Jill Kathryn Keene of Lenoir and David Troy Smith Sr. of Urbanna, Va. He enjoyed being the middle of three sons, looking up to his brother David Jr., and being an older brother to Cole.

Lucas was an aspiring young man with many talents, goals and dreams. A junior at Hibriten High School, he was a talented football player and wrestler. Some of his accomplishments in sports were receiving the Coach’s Award in wrestling, qualifying for Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va., and competing in the Southeast Regionals at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., and in Atlanta. Lucas played Quarterback on the football team, playing offense and defense. He took the team to the Quarterfinals in the State Regionals. He was a member of the Varsity Club AFS, and was voted most improved in wresting, and was in honor classes.

His goals and dreams included applying for a wrestling scholarship at Old Dominion University, being a member of the ROTC Program at college, majoring in business and history. After college, he planned to join the United States Marine Corps, as an officer. This dream was important to him to serve his country due to his parents meeting and marrying in the USMC in Okinawa, Japan. He was extremely proud of his parents and wanted to follow in their footsteps. Lucas will be wearing his father’s USMC Dress Blue uniform. Lucas was well liked by everyone who knew him. He was a young man who truly loved his family, friends and all he came in contact with. He truly will be missed. His memory will live on through the memories shared by so many.

He was a member of Lenoir First Wesleyan Church and was preceded in death by a grandfather, Raymond Keene.

Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, Jill Kathryn Kenne and David Troy Smith Sr.; brothers, David Troy Smith Jr. of Lenoir and Ryan Cole Smith of Virginia; grandparents, Lacy and Daisy Smith of Virginia and Patricia Keene of Lenoir; his uncles and aunts, Lacy Henry Smith Jr., Ernest Charles Smith Sr., Elizabeth Virginia Pyle, Michael Bryan Smith and Lisa Summerlin and husband Freddy; his extended family, The White Family, The Tuttle Family, and the Caldwell County Law Enforcement Family; his girlfriend, Emma Tuttle, and his best friend, Tanner White.

The family will receive friends Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, from 12–4 p.m. at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center, 1913 Hickory Blvd SE, Lenoir. The funeral service will begin at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Mike Minton, the Rev. James Baker, the Rev. Sergeant Greg Snider, Travis Dillard and Tim Sanders officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be Hunter Penley, Will Kent, Matt Cannon, Coach Todd Champion, Coach Tim Poarch, and Coach Josh Woodruff. Coleman Clark will carry and place Lucas’s helmet and jersey, and Zac Dillard will carry and place Lucas’s head gear and singlet.

The family requests that everyone attending the services please wear something red. This was one of his favorite colors, and showed his Panther pride.

The Hibriten High School Football Team, Wrestling Team, 12th Man Club, Coaches and Cheerleaders and the Class of 2015 will all be seated together and dress accordingly.

Dwight Dyson

Dwight James Dyson, 79, of Taylorsville died Monday, Jan. 27, 2014. Visitation will be Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, 5-7 p.m. at Liledoun Baptist Church. The service will be Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Liledoun Baptist Church. Arrangements entrusted to Alexander Funeral Service.

Ross Watson

Ross “Pete” Jerome Watson, 74, of Dreamfields Lane, Lenoir, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. He was born Oct. 22, 1939, in Richmond, Va., to the late Ross William and Faye Saulman Watson.

Mr. Watson was owner and operator of Ross & Company and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Anders Watson; two daughters, Dawn Watson King and husband Thomas, and Michelle Watson, both of Lenoir; two brothers, David W. Watson and Steve Watson, both of Lenoir; and two grandsons, Tristan Ross and Grayson Seth.

Memorial services will be held Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at 7 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Kevin Matheson.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

LaVenta Walker

LaVenta Annette Tuttle Walker, 74, of Stanardsville, Va., passed away on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at Grace Health and Rehabilitation Center of Greene County, Va.

Ms. Walker was born in Caldwell County on May 15, 1939, to William Luther Tuttle and Mildred Arney Tuttle, both of whom preceded her in death.

The bulk of Ms. Walker's working life revolved around health care: beginning as a medical secretary at Blackwelder Hospital, continuing as an in-home caregiver for the elderly and as an occasional medical transcriptionist, and eventually working for fifteen years as a CNA at Caldwell County Hospice.

Ms. Walker's faith and her relationship with God were very much central to her life, and she was immensely grateful through the years for the support, friendship, and encouragement she received while attending Lenoir's St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

She is survived by her brother, Robert Tuttle of Fairfax Station, Va.; her former husband, James Clark Walker of Charlotte; and her son, Derek Walker of Stanardsville, Va.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home Chapel, 322 Wilkesboro Blvd. SE, Lenoir, NC 28645, followed by burial at Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Gene Woods

Gene Kenneth Woods, 73, of Still Meadow Way, Lenoir, died Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care – Lenoir. He was born Sept. 7, 1940, in Caldwell County to the late Cecil and Dessie Sanders Woods. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lonnie Woods.

Mr. Woods was retired from the furniture industry and was a member of Blue Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Brenda Walker Woods of the home; one son, Timothy Woods and wife Karen of Lenoir; one daughter, Elisa Crump of Lenoir; two brothers, Paul Woods and wife Nancy of Lenoir, and Roger Woods and wife Mildred of Granite Falls; two sisters, Bonnie Harmon and husband Charles of Granite Falls, and Sharon Gragg and husband Dennis of Lenoir; and two grandchildren, Ethan Crump and Caleb Woods.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, at 3 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Jack Lewis. Interment will follow at Laurel Haven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Ethan Crump, Caleb Woods, Tyler Gragg, Rodney Woods, Jonathan Woods and Darren Woods.

Charles Pinkney Woods, 77, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Mable Harding

Mable Fender Harding, 90, of Lenoir passed away Monday, Jan. 27, 2014, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care in Hudson.

Mrs. Harding was born in Unicoi, Tenn., to the late Andy Fender and Birdie Edwards Fender. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Carmon Harding; two sons, Troy and Junior Harding; two brothers; and three sisters.

She was retired from the furniture industry and was of the Baptist faith.

Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Dallas Harding and wife Dovie of Lenoir; her daughters, Arlene Crawford and husband Burlan of Weaverville, Rose Bogart and husband John of Albuquerque, N.M., and Donna Briggs of Micaville; a brother, Dauris Fender and wife Barbara Ann of Erwin, Tenn.; a sister, Stella Robinson of Erwin, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; three stepchildren; five step-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at 2 p.m. in Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Wallace Smith and the Rev. Debbie Barker officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home from 1 until 2 p.m.

The grandsons of Mrs. Harding will serve as pallbearers.
