Melba Williams Harmon, 73, of Old Linville Road in Marion died Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at her home.
Born on May 14, 1940, in McDowell County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Virginia Hollifield Williams. She was a graduate of Harris High School and was retired from First Security Insurance Company with 25 years' service and later retired from State Farm Insurance with 10 years' service. She was a member of the Grassy Creek Baptist Church.
Mrs. Melba Harmon is survived by her husband, James Arlen Harmon of Marion; her daughter, Mindy Greer and husband Tommy of Hudson; her grandson, Tyler Norville and wife Kayla of Lenoir; her step-grandson, Zack Greer of Morganton; her great-granddaughter, Alexis Greer of Morganton; and her brother, Charles Ronald Williams and wife Barbara of Spruce Pine.
The funeral service for Melba Harmon will be conducted on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at 120 noon at the Grassy Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Matt Mills officiating. Interment will follow in the Grassy Creek Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11 a.m. until the service hour at the church.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of Mitchell County or Grassy Creek Baptist Church.

Elizabeth “Betty” Clarke Martin, 69, of Raleigh passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Elmcroft of Raleigh.
Ms. Martin was born in Caldwell County to the late Clarence Wilson Clarke and Martha Louise Hoover Clarke. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Clarke.
She was retired from BB&T in Charlotte, a former member of the First Baptist Church of Lenoir and a graduate of Lenoir High School, where she played clarinet in the band, and also a graduate of Mitchell College. She was an excellent tennis player and supreme shagger. Betty was past president and Homemaker of the Year of the Mecklenburg County, N.C., Extention Homemakers Club as well leading her daughters' Girl Scout Troops.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Christine Bannerman of Raleigh and Amanda Maer of Huntersville; her brother, Clarence “Sonny” Clarke of Florida; a sister, Martha Abernethy of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Emily Louise Bannerman of Raleigh and Cora Elizabeth Maer of Huntersville; nieces, Jessica Abernethy Lindsay of Raleigh, Lydia Anne Abernethy of Jackson, Wyoming and Melinda Suddenbert; nephews, David, Steven and Robert Clarke; grand-nephews, Adam and Tyler Clarke and a grand-niece Rachael Clarke; cousins, Judy Lovins, Kay Clarke and Spencer Clarke.
A funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Sides officiating. Burial will follow at Belleview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Pendry’s Lenoir Funeral Home.

Kenneth “Ray” Braswell, 77, of Starcross Road, Lenoir, passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care-Kirkwood. He was born Sept. 2, 1936, in Caldwell County to the late John W. and Verna Story Braswell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Merle Braswell, and one sister, Loretta Thompson.
Mr. Braswell retired from Nacco Materials and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Lenoir Masonic Lodge #262, past Governor of the Moose Lodge #385 and was a member of the Shriners. Mr. Braswell served as manager of Caldwell County Fair from 1990-2001 and was a Judge of the State Agricultural Fairs Program. He was an avid NASCAR fan.
Survivors include his wife, Mabel Norris Braswell of the home; two sons, Kenneth R. Braswell and wife Carolyn, and Brian E. Braswell and wife Darlene, all of Lenoir; two daughters, Brenda B. Strickland and husband Lee of Acworth, Ga., and Darlene C. Wilson and husband Paul of Lenoir; one sister-in-law, Donna Braswell of Thomasville; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was well-loved by a host of other family members and relatives.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Speaker Anderson Dula. Entombment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.
Masonic rites will be conducted by Hibriten Masonic Lodge #262.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 4 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home.
Serving as pallbearers will be family and friends.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Shriners and friends.

Zachary Michael Boozer, 21, went on to heaven to be with Jesus and the angels on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, after a lifelong illness with muscular dystrophy. Zachary was greatly loved by so many over the years of his life. Everyone will greatly miss his wonderful smile. We know that he is smiling now in heaven with Jesus and all the angels.
Zachary is the son of Delores Gail and Joey A. Boozer of Lenoir. He was born on Dec. 31, 1991, in Newberry, S.C., where he was raised up before moving to North Carolina six years ago. He loved the many years here, including the peaceful mountain settings.
Zachary is survived by his parents of the home, a loving and caring sister, Tabitha Michelle Boozer, and a special brother, Joshua Talmadge Boozer, also of the home.
Zachary was diagnosed 17 years ago with Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy and has been strong and a courageous young man through this long battle.
Zachary is survived by a grandmother, Barbara Louise Taylor of Whitmire, S.C. He was preceded in death by grandparents Arthur Milton “Hoss” and Dessie Rae Hipp Boozer of Prosperity, S.C., and two special great-aunts, Mrs. Peggy Hipp Garrett of Batesburg, S.C., and Mrs. Narvis Werts of Prosperity, S.C.
A celebration of Zachary’s life will be held in the Chapel of Evans Funeral Service on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2013, at 12 noon with Pastor Rick Safiet officiating. Interment will be at Laurel Haven Cemetery.
