Rachel Price

Rachel Wright Hamby Price, 91, of Granite Falls went home to be with her Saviour on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Camelot Manor Nursing Care Facility. She was a beloved mother and grandmother, born Nov. 10, 1922, in Haywood County.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husbands, Albert Hamby and John J. Price; two brothers, Glen and Tommy; two sisters, Marie Johnson and Evelen Ledbetter; and one granddaughter, Vicky Hamby.

Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Peggy Cannon and husband Ervin of Hudson, and Doris Hicks and husband David of Hudson; her two sons, James Hamby and wife Kyong-Hi of Granite Falls, and Tony Hamby and wife Joyce of Colletsville; one sister, JoAnn Dameron of Lenoir; and one brother, Frankie Price of Granite Falls. Ms. Price is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Ms. Price was a member of Granite Falls Church of God. She served for many years as a Sunday School Teacher, and president of the Willing Workers. She also cleaned the church.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at Granite Falls Church of God from 1 until 2 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Granite Falls Church of God with the Rev. Michael Vandenburg and the Rev. Dennis Pitts officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.

Lucy Hood

Lucy Ann Dula Hood, 78, of 2185 Broadland Road, Lenoir, passed away Dec. 5, 2013, at the Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care Inc. Mrs. Hood was born June 22, 1935, in Caldwell County to the late Rev. Monroe Dula and the late Mary Janie Crews Dula.

She was a member of Dulatown Presbyterian Church USA and a former member of the Presbyterian Women, Deacon, Finance Committee, Hospitality Committee, and the Usher Board. She was also a retired employee of Bernhardt Industrial Plant #3. She was also a member of the National Poet Society.

She was preceded in death in addition to her parents by her brothers, Albert Dula, James Bradley Dula, Bryant Dula and Marvin Dula; and sisters, Demetra Norwood and Ruth D. Anderson.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Hood Sr. of Asheville; daughter, Nadine Hood, and son, Charles Hood Jr., both of the home; daughter, Joni Smith (Jerry) of Shelby; sisters, Marjorie Erwin of Decatur, Ga., and Veronica Bell of Laurel, Md.; brothers, Hanibal Dula (Beatrice) of Lenoir, Curtis Dula (Betty) of Lenoir, Martin Dula of North Olmstead, Ohio; grandchildren, Shay Hood, Raven Pearson, Avery Smith, Jaelin Hood; great-grandchild, Olazia Roseboro; sister-in-laws, Beulah Dula of Cincinnati, Ohio, Lois Dula, Marie Perkins, Marilyn Connelly, Jerlene Dula and Carolyn Dula, all of Lenoir; brother-in-laws, Richard Hood (Linda) and Paul Hood, both of Lenoir; and a host of nephews and nieces; special caregivers Carolyn Dula, Deneen Moore and Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care Inc.

Services will be held Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Dulatown Presbyterian Church USA. The Revs. Hal Bennett and E.B. Freeman will be officiating. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Park. Family will receive friends at the church from 1-1:55 p.m. Memorials may be made to Dulatown Presbyterian Church USA Building Fund, P.O. Lois Gaston

Lois Gaston, 96, of Indian Camp, W.Va., died Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir. Services were held Saturday in Buckhannon, W.Va., with burial in the Big Bend Cemetery in Sago, WV. Online condolences may be made to the family at www.polingstclair.com.

Paul Reid Sr.

Paul Jerry Reid Sr., 73, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Paul Ottis Reid and Madge Faye Yount Reid.

He is preceded in death by both parents; his wife, Shirley Mitcham Reid; two sisters, Alice Icenhour and Judy Joplin; and one brother, Jack Dixon Reid.

He is survived by two sons, Jerry and wife Angie Reid of Granite Falls, and Eddie and wife Shelby Reid of Hudson; two daughters, Kim and husband Jeff Bailey of Hickory, and Lorrie and husband Roger Houston of Taylorsville; seven grandchildren, Chris and Justin Reid, Adam and Nicholas Houston, Phillip Bailey, Samantha Wheeler, and Shannon Leigh Reid; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Dale Reid of Granite Falls; three sisters, Mattie Reid of Hickory, Robin Lowendowski of Hudson, and Sherry Duffey of Granite Falls. He will also be missed by a special friend, Iris Estes.

Mr. Reid loved music, fishing, golfing, cooking, and spending time with his family.

The family will receive friends at Mackie Funeral Home on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013, from 6 to 7 p.m. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 7 p.m. in Mackie Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Howell and the Rev. Tom McDonald officiating. Burial will be private.

Kelvin Dula

Kelvin Thurston Dula, 56, of Willow Street, Lenoir, died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Timi Harper

Timi Kay Richardson Harper, 58, of Matthews died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. Services Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Shining Light Baptist Church, 2541 Old Charlotte Highway, Monroe, NC 28110. Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Norma Cozart

Norma Virginia Robbins Cozart of Lenoir died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013. She was 87.

Norma was born on March 7, 1926, in Caldwell County to the late Rufus Robbins and Pearl Powell Robbins. She was the youngest of eight children and spent a happy childhood growing up in Lenoir with her family. She married Wallace Cozart in 1946 and moved with her husband into a house right next door to her childhood home. In 1948 they welcomed a daughter, Jennifer Diane. Norma was devoted to her family and was an excellent homemaker. She also spent many years serving as a cafeteria server and manager for Happy Valley Elementary School. Norma was a lifelong member of Nelson's Chapel Baptist Church. A big part of Norma's life was being "Maw Maw" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Those who knew her will always remember her beautiful laugh, her tenacious yet gentle spirit, her love for the Lord and devotion to her family. Her grandchildren treasure the memories of late-night chats over Chinese Checkers and hold her in their hearts as the strongest woman they've ever known.

Norma was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, Ronda Robbins, Atwell Suddreth, and Wayne Robbins; her sisters Lorena Robbins McGinnis, Gladys Suddreth Whitener, and Verolee Robbins Greene; her husband, Wallace Cozart; and her daughter, Jennifer Cozart Suddreth. Norma is survived by her sister Dorothy Robbins Bounds of Powell, Tenn.; her son-in-law Sherwin Suddreth of Raleigh; her grandchildren, Geoffrey Suddreth and wife Heather of Morrisville, and Kristen Sanservino and husband Nick of Morrisville; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will take place at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, at Nelson's Chapel Baptist Church in Lenoir, with a memorial service to follow at 2 with Pastor Eddie Summerlin officiating. Interment will immediately follow the service in the church cemetery.

Jewel Jones

Jewel Catherine Ferguson Jones, 91, of the Ferguson Community died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday 2 p.m., Dec. 11, 2013, at Beaver Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn and the Rev. Hal Vannoy officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jones was born July 23, 1922, in Caldwell County to James M. and Nellie Walsh Ferguson. She was a member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church and the Wilkes County Women’s Democratic Association. She and her husband were in the lumber and poultry business.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Winston Jones; a son, Rob Roy Jones; a sister, Reba Ferguson Hamby and a brother, Rayvon Ferguson.

She is survived by two sons, William Tony Jones of the home, and James Douglas “Doug” Jones and wife Becky of Wilkesboro; two grandchildren, Timothy Z. Jones of Ferguson, and Janene Jones Roberts and husband William of Wilkesboro; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mattie Nell Ferguson Cleary and husband Minter of North Wilkesboro, and Inez Ferguson Miller and husband Dr. Bayne.

Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 520 Winkler Mill Road, Wilkesboro, NC 28697, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Pallbearers will be; Larry Baker, Terry Cleary, Thad Dillard, Timothy Z. Jones, William Roberts and Tommy Z. Walsh.
