Phyllis Billings

Phyllis Ann Billings, 69, of Valdese went home to be with her Lord and Savior Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Burke Hospice and Palliative Care, winning her battle over cancer. She was born April 15, 1944, in Caldwell County to the late Howard M. Bolick and Deatte Coffey Bolick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Allan Billings.

Mrs. Billings was a homemaker and a member of Amazing Grace Community Church in Valdese.

Survivors include two daughters, Sarah Billings and fiancée Jackie Mayo of Lincolnton, and Jennifer Wright and husband Jerry of Valdese; three brothers, Lonnie Byrd of Lenoir, and Gerald Bolick and wife Barbara, also of Lenoir, and Thomas Dale Bolick of Avery County; two sisters, Jean B. Nelson of Lenoir, and Gail B. Bass and husband James, also of Lenoir; and four grandchildren, Lindsey Keller, Samuel Chafin Cornwell II, Heather Wright and Brooke Wright.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by Pastor Tom Church. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mildred Munday

Mildred Bean Munday, 86, of the Baton community passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at College Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Munday was born in Caldwell County to the late Bascom Bean and Lettie Kaylor Bean. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ward G. Munday; a brother, Perry “Buck” Bean; two sisters, Lucille Beane and Hazel Brown; and a great grandson, Timothy Stedman. She was a retiree of Alba Waldensian with 37 years of service and was a longtime member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church. She loved to cook and was a great cook and loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Jim Munday and wife Mary of Granite Falls, and Dale Munday and wife Hilda of Issaquah, Wash.; her daughter, Delores M. Robbins and husband Clifford of Granite Falls; a brother, Jack Bean of Clover, S.C.; a sister, Bennie Sue Rector of Rutherford College; five grandchildren, Michael Todd Robbins, Sharon Stedman, Jason Robbins, Brian Munday and Anna English; and nine great-grandsons.

The family will receive friends at Mountain Grove Baptist Church Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the church at 3 p.m. with Dr. Clifton Black and Reverend Jeff Burkhimer officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be Bill Henderson, Stacy Setzer, Jeffrey Setzer, Jackie Bean, Junior Rector and Bryson Annas.

Connie Taylor

Connie Mae Taylor, 62, of Bristol, Tenn., passed away Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Lenoir on Aug. 26, 1951, a daughter of the late A.V. and Eunice Bumgarner Smith.

Connie is survived by her sons, Eric Taylor and wife Jamie, and Freddie Sharp; daughter, Michelle Abernathy and husband Roger; three grandchildren; sisters, Frances Murphy and Opal Herman; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Blevins Funeral Services, Bristol, Va. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at Mount Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery, 3555 Christie Road, Hudson, NC 28638. Isaac Davis

Isaac “Buck” Wheeler Davis, 78, of Granite Falls died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, 3 p.m. in the Bass-Smith Granite Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service at Bass-Smith Granite.

Rennette Jones

Rennette Corpening Jones, 65, of Lenoir passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Caldwell UNC Health Care.

Joan Echard

Joan Imogene “Emma” Echard, 82, of Miller Hill Road, Lenoir, died Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Gateway Nursing Center. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory.

Edwin Robbins

Edwin Robert Robbins, 52, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Baltimore, Md., he lived in Elizabethton for the past 12 years. He had worked at Mays Brothers and also in Electronic Alarm Systems. He was of the Baptist Faith. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Edwin was preceded in death by his father: Robert Eugene Robbins, and a brother, Steven A. Robbins.

Survivors include his mother, Grace Kratzer Robbins of Hudson; a sister and brother-in-law, Sherri R. and Carl Burchett of Lenoir; a brother and sister-in-law, Clifford E. and Delores Robbins of Granite Falls; his girlfriend of 10 years, Michelle Ludwig; and several nieces and nephews.

Alene Pennell

Alene Elizabeth Cannon Pennell, 90, of Lenoir passed away Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Pennell was born in Caldwell County to the late Bertha Cannon Paysour and stepfather Frank Paysour. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William P. Pennell, and stepbrother, Burl Paysour.

She was a homemaker and a lifelong member of North Catawba Baptist Church. She loved visiting with her friends, enjoyed reading her bible, going out to eat and spending time with her family. She loved to take trips to the mountains to see the deer and just loved to ride anywhere.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, Ronnie Pennell and wife Gail of Lenoir, and Ricky Pennell and wife Pam of Hudson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins, who were caring, faithful and supportive to Mrs. Pennell.

A funeral service will be held Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at 12 p.m. at North Catawba Baptist Church with the Rev. John Barnhardt officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m.

Juanita McDowell

Juanita Noggle “Nita” McDowell, 91, of Lenoir died Jan. 8. Born in Cleveland County on Jan. 5, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Jessie McClure Noggle and Audrey Lee Wilkie Noggle. Nita was a member of First United Methodist Church in Lenoir and sang in the choir for 40 years. She was an avid reader, loved doing needlework, and belonged to the monthly Book Club.

Nita is survived by her daughter, Martha Huff and her husband, Jim, of Forest, Va., and a granddaughter, Morgan Huff of Williamsburg, Va.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. McDowell was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Stuart McDowell; and a sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Nial Stroupe.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 18, in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:30-11 a.m. prior to the service.

Elsie Reece

Elsie Calloway Reece, 75, of Hudson passed away on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at her home.

Born Oct. 25, 1938, in Avery County, Elsie was a daughter of the late Leo and Vinti Arnette Calloway. She was a beautician for many years and was a member of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Lucas Reece; a great granddaughter, Rebecca Reece; a sister, Bea Kaylor; and two brothers, Wayburn Calloway and Hoyt Calloway.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard Allen Reece of the Home; a daughter, Teresa Church and fiancé Jim Brown of Lenoir; a son, Reggie Reece of Hudson; two sisters, Glenda Carter and Pansy Keen; four brothers, Junior Calloway, Buck Calloway, Jim Calloway and Ronnie Calloway; and six grandchildren, Scarlet Glover, Chris Church, Dustin Church, Ethan Reece, Chase Reece and Caleb Reece. Elsie is also survived by numerous other relatives.

A celebration of Elsie’s life will be held on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at the Mount Carmel Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with Pastor Clyde Bumgarner and Pastor Bill Bentley officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Clarice McClure

Mrs. Clarice B. McClure, 77, of Lenoir passed away on Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at the Lenoir Health Care Center.

Born in 1936 in Beauty, Ky., she was a daughter of the late James and Verna K. Salmons. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Lenoir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Robert G. McClure Jr., and a daughter, Alice K. Eggers.

Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Robert G. McClure Sr. of the Home; her children, Bonnie J. McClure, James A. McClure and Verna L. Hollar; a brother, Ernie Salmons; and a sister, Connie Griffith. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A graveside celebration of Clarice’s life will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Lenoir with Pastor John Jernigan officiating.

Jimmy Barnwell

Jimmy Robert Barnwell, 81, of Hudson died Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at Frye Regional Medical Center. He was born Sept. 21, 1932, in Burke County to the late Clyde J. and Hazel Crotts Barnwell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee Barnwell.

Mr. Barnwell retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Granite Falls branch, after 35 years of service as a mail carrier. He was a member of Hudson First Baptist Church and loved to travel and garden. Mr. Barnwell was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1953-1955 aboard the USS Saipan-AD3 V-2 Division.

Survivors include one son, Keith Barnwell and wife Gayle of Granite Falls; two daughters, Barbara Barnwell Dotson of Hickory and Sherri Barnwell and partner Wendy Reynolds of Lenoir; one granddaughter, Tyler Dotson Chapman and husband Paul; and one grandson, James Robert Barnwell, U.S. Navy, and fiancée Natalie Ruelas, of Augusta, Ga.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Hudson conducted by Dr. R. Mack Jarvis III.  Entombment will follow with full military honors at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens of Lenoir.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. one hour prior to the service at the church. 

Serving as pallbearers will be Paul Chapman, James Barnwell, Jim Dotson,  Darrell Johnson, Alan Coonse and Alan Nichols. 

Honorary pallbearers will be Sanford Bolick, Leonard Mayes and Stanley Hall.

R.A. Annas

R.A. Annas, 86, of Morganton passed away at the N.C. State Veterans Home in Black Mountain.

Born Aug. 14, 1927, in Caldwell County, he was the son of the late Con and Callie Braswell Annas. He retired as the upholster quality control manager of Drexel Heritage Furniture.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Braswell Annas; a great-grandson, Balin Michael Leonhardt; brothers: Foy Annas and Rev. Mack Annas.

Mr. Annas is survived by a son, Robert “Bobby” Annas and wife Nina of Morganton; a daughter, Susan Bollinger of Lenoir; a brother, the Rev. Nick Annas; and sisters, Connie Bradshaw and Nancy Coffey; grandchildren, Sharon Franklin, Steve Annas, Brandie Renner, Ronnie Bollinger II, Scott Bollinger; great-grandchildren, Allison Annas, Patrick Annas, Dylan Franklin, Samantha Renner, Ayden Bollinger, Lincoln Bollinger, Carson Bollinger and Campbell Bollinger.

The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, in the chapel of the mausoleum at Burke Memorial Park with the Rev. Steve Walsh of Miller Hill Baptist Church in Lenoir officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, 2014, at Miller Hill Baptist Church.
