Roy Rogers Coffey, 73, of Newport died Thursday, May 23, 2013, at home.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Brooks Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Jack Mumford officiating.
Mr. Coffey was born Dec. 26, 1939, in Lenoir to Ralph Jerome and Ellen Beatrice Pope Coffey. He served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era, and was a carpenter in the construction business.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Brasiel Coffey; daughters, Donna Gail Holtsclaw of Martinsville, Va., and Alicia Vaughn of Newport; sons, Mikeal Anthony Coffey and wife Regina of Morganton, and Nathan Dewight Coffey of Morganton; sister, Kimerly Coffey Hall of Lenoir; brothers, Stanley Coffey of Henderson, Gary Coffey of Lenoir, and Gene Coffey of Oxford; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
In addition to his parents, his brothers Jerry Coffey and Larry Coffey (infant) preceded him in death.

Russell Dickson Harris, 59, of Taylor Farm Road, Lenoir, died Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at the residence. He was born March 21, 1954, in Yancey County to the late Paul Lee Harris and Lucille Hensley Harris.
Survivors include two brothers, Dennis Ward Harris and wife Natalie of Lenoir, and Doyle Lee Harris and wife Betsy of Granite Falls; and two sisters, Jo Ann Price of Granite Falls, and Brenda Jane Fox and husband Clyde of Green Mountain.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Shirley Ann Eller, 72, of Cedar Valley Road, Hudson, passed away June 4, 2013, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
Born May 20, 1941, in Caldwell County, she was a daughter of parents Maynard Lee Eller Sr. and Madge Kirby Eller.
She was preceded in death by her late parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Lee Eller Sr.; sisters, Doris Eller Craig and Linda Jean Eller; and two brothers, Maynard Lee Eller Jr. and Albert Wayne Eller.
Survivors include two brothers, Horace R. Eller and James F. Eller Sr., both of Hudson; three sisters, Barbara E. Prestwood of Lenoir, Polly M. Rogers and Martha E. Bumgarner of Naples, Fla.; as well as many wonderful nieces and nephews whom she treasured.
The funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Mack Jarvis, Dr. Wade Dellinger and the Rev. Leon Morrow at First Baptist Church of Hudson at 2 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:30 until 2 p.m. in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Hudson.
Pallbearers will be her nephews: Max Prestwood Jr. Jackie L. Miller Jr., Jeff Bumgarner, Todd Bumgarner, Jerry Bumgarner, Charles Eller, Allen Wayne Eller and James Eller Jr.
A private burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

Helen Bivins Russell, 94, of Raleigh passed away peacefully on June 4, 2013, at Brighton Gardens of Raleigh.
She was born in Hickory on Sept. 29, 1918, to Dorse and Mattie Starnes Bivins. She graduated from Hickory High School and attended Lenoir-Rhyne College before starting her career with Shuford Mills' payroll department in Hickory and Granite Falls, where she retired in 1984.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Granite Falls until moving in 1997 to Raleigh, where she became a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents and by her beloved husband of 56 years, John Allison Russell. She was also preceded in death by her brother, R.D. Bivins Jr. of Martinsville, Va., and by her five sisters, Estelle Dubin of Badin, Hazel Leinbach of Winston-Salem, Carrie Bryson of Hickory, Willie Mae Huffman of Hickory, and Mary Beam of Hickory.
She is survived by her son, Dr. Roger B. Russell and wife Beth of Raleigh, and by her four devoted grandchildren, Jennifer Lane Russell and partner Brandon Russell of Washington, D.C., Allison Russell Davis and husband Ben of New York, N.Y., Drew Russell and wife Elizabeth Anne of Charlotte, and Taylor Russell of New York, N.Y.
A graveside service will be held at Pinecrest Cemetery in Granite Falls at a later date.
The family would like to thank the staffs of The Oaks of Whitaker Glen and of Brighton Gardens of Raleigh for their dedication and compassionate care.

Everette McKinley Hanks, 84, of Wilkesboro died Friday, May 31, 2013, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Monday June 3, 2013, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Father John Shields and the Rev. Ted Combs officiating. Entombment was in Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family received at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home from 5 until 7 Sunday night.
Mr. Hanks was born in Wilkes County, on Aug. 26, 1928, to Joseph McKinley and Nancy Elmira Sidden Hanks. He was a member, former deacon and Sunday School Superintendent at Walnut Grove Baptist Church in the Springfield Community. Mr. Hanks retired from Broyhill Furniture Industries after 32 years of service.
In addition to his parents and wife, Reba Pruitt Hanks, Mr. Hanks was preceded in death by a sister, Dessie Hanks Culler.
Mr. Hanks is survived by two daughters, Sandra Johnson and husband Gerald of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Sharon Lyall and husband Tony of Wilkesboro; one son, Jerry Hanks and wife Judy of Lenoir; one brother, Joseph Oliver Hanks and wife Nell of Hays; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Margaret Throneburg Sherrill Barnett passed from this earthly life to her heavenly home on Tuesday, June 4, at Lutheran Home West in Hickory.
Margaret was born Aug. 24, 1919, in Caldwell County to the late Karl P. and Anna Brown Throneburg. She was one of nine children and was blessed to have a twin sister, Martha. With her beautiful alto voice she enjoyed singing with her sisters and family and was a member of the First United Methodist church choir in Granite Falls for many years. Being a homemaker most of her life was a joy to her and a blessing to her children.
Her first job was working in the Throneburg store in Hudson, where she grew up, and then later at Rosaine’s and Melville's clothing stores in Hickory. Everyone who knew Margaret enjoyed her lovely smile and her quick wit. She was dearly loved by her family and the staff at Lutheran Home West in Hickory where she resided for the last two years.
Margaret was preceded in death by her first husband, the late Joe E. Sherrill, and her second husband, Dee Barnett. Also preceding her in death were three sisters and four brothers. Sisters preceding her were Nell Throneburg, Martha Adams (her twin), and Faye Conway. Brothers preceding her were Karl Jr., Ben, Colen and Wilfred (Willie) Throneburg.
She is survived by her two children, Joe Sherrrill and wife Sandra of Hickory and Phyllis Sherrill Stanin and her husband Fred of Lafayette, Calif. Also surviving her are two stepchildren, Vickie Myers and husband Sid of La Grange, and Sidney Barnett and wife Linda of High Point. She is also survived by one sister, Louise (Sis) McCall of Lenoir.
Grandchildren surviving her are Karl Sherrill and wife Melissa of Jamestown, and Kathryn Sherrill Fisher and husband Adrian of Hickory. Eight great-grandchildren also survive her: Anna Fisher, Lane Sherrill, Spencer Sherrill, Joshua Fisher, Margaret Sherrill, Hunter Fisher, Mason Fisher and Taylor Fisher.
The family would like to thank the caregivers for their loving, attentive care at Lutheran Home Hickory West and Kingston Residence.
A celebration of her life will be held at First United Methodist Church in Granite Falls on Friday, June 7, 2013. The family will receive at the church from 1 to 2:30 p.m. with the service at 3 p.m.
