Letter: Don't listen to the fear

Labor Day is behind us, and the political campaigns are heating up. I’m already tired of the campaign ads on television, just as everyone else is, I’m sure. So as we get ready to slog through the rest of this dirty season, I have some ideas that may help make things go a little easier for voters.

Letter: Don't miss Loving Lenoir 2014

Please note that a very special weekend is happening in Lenoir the weekend of Oct. 3-5. It is called LOVING LENOIR 2014. It is the fourth annual weekend of reunions, community service, and most importantly honoring music/arts educators with a Sunday afternoon concert.

Letter: Abuse taking America hostage

All you hear on the news anymore is things about abuse. There is so much in our country today that it is sickening. We used to live in a peaceful nation where abuse was rare.

Letter: N.C. doesn't get what it pays for

Also, most of us think it would be sheer nonsense to be paying federal taxes into a program that would benefit 500,000 poor North Carolinians who work in low-paying jobs, but our state legislature and governor have said, “No, you poor folk can’t have it.”

Sep. 07, 2014 @ 06:12 AM

Letter: Keep promise made to veterans, families

It is with great disappointment that the Granite Falls Veterans Memorial Committee and the town have not honored their "Veteran's Application For Name Inscription" form as distributed to the public and posted on the town's website.

Column: Reporter's murder shows the danger

Once again we have been confronted with the horrors of the world in the inhuman murder of reporter Jim Foley. His death at the hands of an Islamic State terrorist, who allegedly is British, has struck fear around the world.

Aug. 24, 2014 @ 01:55 AM

Letter: Obey speed limit, watch the road

What will it take for people to SLOW DOWN on the Shew Hollow Road?

Aug. 24, 2014 @ 01:53 AM

Letter: Doing the right thing

Our country has become a shadow of what it once was, not because it lacks the capability to achieve greatness but because it lacks the will.

Aug. 24, 2014 @ 01:52 AM

Letter: Democrats, and Reid, need Hagan to win

The party controlling the Senate matters --- for immigration, for judges and much else. Hence the Democrats' mega-millions ad blitz. To keep Obama doing what he is doing, Democrats need Kay Hagan in the Senate and Harry Reid in charge.

Aug. 22, 2014 @ 09:36 AM

Letter: Memories of the 1940 flood

I was 13 in 1940 when the flood came, and I had a front-row seat, so to speak.

Aug. 17, 2014 @ 04:37 AM

Letter: Thanks to anonymous benefactor

Andy and his Army buddy are stationed at Fort Drum, N.Y. Jeff is in the Reserves, and neither one was in uniform, but apparently someone there saw their military haircuts and paid for our meal.

Aug. 15, 2014 @ 02:35 PM

Letter: No time for obstructionism

One would think that all patriotic Americans would unite, support and assist our president in these perilous times.

Aug. 03, 2014 @ 04:20 AM

Letter: Taxation isn't beer

With respect to Jim Davidson’s amusing story in your July 30 issue on how our tax system works, I was further amused by the manner in which the critical logical flaw in his analogy of the beer tavern was glossed over.

Jul. 27, 2014 @ 01:17 AM

Letter: More cats go missing

I've had two more cats go missing.

Jul. 27, 2014 @ 01:16 AM

Letter: Meadows always chasing fake issues

Why is U.S. Rep. Mark Meadows so negative all the time?

Jul. 27, 2014 @ 01:15 AM

Letter: Destructive mindset

A single mindset — not really “American” in nature — connects and feeds most things harming America. At the same time it overloads society.

Jul. 20, 2014 @ 06:40 AM

Letter: Group's work on ramp was prayer answered

In reference to the July 2 front page article on Carolina Cross Connection: I am a 64-year-old disabled lady with COPD, severe back problems and on oxygen 24/7. This fine group of people volunteered their vacation time to stay at Camp Carolwood for a week and come to Gamewell three days and built me a ramp.

Jul. 20, 2014 @ 06:40 AM

Letter: Keep saying no to alcohol

Thank you to the Hudson commissioners who gave the proposal of an alcohol referendum in Hudson the "cold shoulder."

Jul. 20, 2014 @ 06:25 AM

Letter: For the sake of Ice Cream and Cake

Late in the evening of June 24 or early in the morning of June 25, at least two individuals decided that it would be fun to enter a vacant rental home I own on Tywood, in the Lower Creek area of Lenoir, and proceed to throw paint throughout the interior.

Jul. 20, 2014 @ 06:24 AM

Jul. 20, 2014 @ 06:23 AM

Letter: Thank you for your help

On Sunday, July 6, on U.S. 321 around 2:30, my husband, J.D. Pennell, blacked out after getting gas at the Hess station in Granite Falls.

Letter: Delapidated buildings are serious problem in Lenoir

Hallelujah, someone else other than myself has obviously taken a ride through Lenoir and noticed all the delapidated buildings and areas that need cleaning up.
