Letter: Rural Center is still here

Feb. 24, 2014 @ 08:36 AM

To the editor:

A Feb. 4 story (“Granite Falls applies for grant to fill vacant building”) left readers with the impression that the N.C. Rural Economic Development Center had been shuttered and that all of the center’s functions had been transferred to the N.C. Department of Commerce. Neither is true. For the past 28 years, the Rural Center’s mission has been to develop, promote and implement sound economic strategies to improve the quality of life of rural North Carolinians. Our commitment to this cause has never wavered. I encourage your readers to visit our website, www.ncruralcenter.org, to learn more about our continued work. Our present initiatives include programs that assist rural entrepreneurs, strengthen small towns and help businesses create new jobs in the areas of our state that need them the most. In addition, the center will soon be holding rural roundtables in your area to gain community input in developing a long-term strategic vision for the Rural Center and rural North Carolina.
