Letter: Tillis is best Republican choice
To the editor:
With just under 100 days to go until the North Carolina Republican primary, it is about that time for voters to tune in to the process. There is no bigger or consequential race in this state than the race for the United States Senate. It is already the most expensive Senate race in the country, and national media reports already state that whichever party wins this race will win control of the United States Senate. Given the gravity of this race I believe that it is imperative for the Republicans to nominate our best possible candidate. That candidate is Speaker of the North Carolina House Thom Tillis.
Tillis’ rise has been swift, as he has been in office only since 2007. But in that time he has led a revolution for North Carolina, beginning with being an engineer of the Republican takeover of the General Assembly in 2010. Since then we have seen key reforms in state government, including historic tax reforms that will cut taxes for every North Carolinian. We have also seen voter ID, tort reform, the Castle Doctrine, and vocational training in education. And thankfully Tillis took the brave stand of defending marriage by gathering the votes to put the Marriage Amendment on the ballot.
In short under Tillis’ leadership we have seen conservatism of every stripe and faction on the march in Raleigh and throughout the state. We need a conservative warrior of his stature and experience in Washington fighting for us in the twilight years of the Obama presidency. While the other candidates in this primary are good people, none have the record of proven accomplishment that Thom Tillis has. And that is why he merits the support of Republicans and independents as we select our nominee for the United States Senate.
