Although Lois Haas knows the time has come, her decision to walk away from one of life's greatest passions has not been easy.

After more than 70 years, Haas has stepped away from her role as organist of Hudson United Methodist Church. She said this decision has been somewhat bittersweet because even though she loves to serve the Lord through her music, her battle with osteoporosis makes it difficult to get around.

"It's my life," Haas said as she reflected on her years at the church. "I thank the Lord every day for this wonderful gift. I truly believe that this is what the Lord wanted me to do."

Haas, who grew up in a musical family, has faithfully worn her robe and cross, and taken her seat at the church organ or piano since she was 20 years old. She said during that time she has worked with 20 or more pastors, played at nearly 100 weddings and performed at most of the churches in Caldwell County.

"I enjoy playing at the services, at weddings and on Wednesday nights. I love it all," Haas said. "I like the hymns, the classical music and helping out the choir. It's been a lot of fun, and I already miss it."

Although Haas said goodbye back in August, her passion for the arts remains steadfast. She has the church's original organ at her home and continues to play the piano and organ when she can. She said she tries to perform for her fellow residents at the Shaire Center and her family when possible

In addition, Haas has used her passion for music and the arts outside of worship. She taught music to children and has dabbled with pastels since she was 11 or 12 years old.

Her artwork is on display throughout the county, including the church. A replica of the original church hangs in the back of the church, and her rendition of Noah's Ark is downstairs near the classrooms. She also has other original pieces scattered throughout the church.

"It's what I love to do," Haas said with a smile.

Over the years, Haas has spread her passion to those around her. She provided her only daughter with access to voice lessons and encouraged her to pursue her dreams.

"She instilled in us a great love of music and the arts," said Miriam Sain. "My passion for music is through singing, and I love to play with my mom when I can. I have performed several solos with her as my accompanist, and I am honored to play with her."
