COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Mountaineers roll past Milligan; Davidson snaps two-game skid
The Mountaineers (6-4), who won their second straight game, shot 56.9 percent from the field (41-for-72) to break the 100-point barrier against Milligan (3-8), an NAIA program, for the second straight year. Appalachian State won 112-47 last season.
Appalachian State took an 11-0 lead and pushed it to 16-2 on Sims' 3-pointer with 17:07 left in the first half. Jeremi Booth's dunk increased the margin to 23-4 just 4:12 into the game.
Sims was 7-for-9 from the 3-point line and made both of his free throw attempts. He is 41-for-43 from the line this year.
Kellen Brand scored 19 points, Isaac Butts had 17, Booth added 14 and Andre Williamson finished with 10 points for the Mountaineers.
Justin Sylvester led Milligan with 25 points.
Davidson 90 The College of New Jersey 49
DAVIDSON (AP) -- Jake Cohen scored a career-high 23 points and blocked four shots, and Steve Rossiter had 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead Davidson in a 90-49 rout of The College of New Jersey on Thursday night.
The Wildcats (3-7), who snapped a two-game skid, shot 52.2 percent (36-for-69), including 14-for-32 from 3-point range, and had 33 assists.
The Lions (4-5) lost their fourth straight game after shooting 28.8 percent (19-for-66) from the field and scoring only five points in the final 7:58.
TCNJ, a Division III school, had not played a Division I opponent since losing to Princeton 59-50 on Jan. 26, 1998.
After Davidson led 54-23 at halftime, the Lions pulled within 26 points with 16:06 left, but could get no closer.
Bryant Barr added 18 points for the Wildcats and J.P. Kuhlman had 13.
Aaron Syvertsen scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half to lead TCNJ.
James Madison 78, Gardner-Webb 57
BOILING SPRINGS (AP) -- Denzel Bowles scored 37 points and had 15 rebounds to lead James Madison to a 78-57 victory over Gardner-Webb on Thursday night.
Bowles, a transfer from Texas A&M playing in his second game for the Dukes (5-4), was 17-for-25 from the field and helped James Madison dominate the second half and win for the first time in three games.
The Dukes gradually built their lead from a two-point halftime advantage to 47-41 on Bowles' layup with 12:09 remaining. Alioune Diouf scored on a layup and Bowles came through with another basket for a 51-41 advantage with 11:16 left.
James Madison scored 56 of its points in the paint and made just three shots outside the lane.
Gardner-Webb (3-6) lost its sixth straight game, its longest losing streak since joining Division I in 2000-01.
Darren White added 22 points for James Madison.
C.J. Hailey led Gardner-Webb with 19 points.
