Charges filed in fatal collision.
Charges have been filed against a Lenoir woman whose van collided with and killed a motorcyclist in late October.
Kimberly June Prestwood, 39, of 2125 Blue Ridge Circle, Lenoir, has been charged by the Lenoir Police Department with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failing to yield the right of way. She was given a written promise to appear in Caldwell County District Court on Thursday, Dec. 17.
LPD Master Patrol Officer Marcus T. Hartley said the charges stem from a motor vehicle collision on Wilkesboro Boulevard in the evening hours of Oct. 22. He said Prestwood was driving a 1997 Dodge van toward Lenoir on Wilkesboro Boulevard when she attempted to turn left into the parking lot by Taco Bell. As Prestwood turned left, she collided with a 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle, ridden by Jessica Emily Ormand of Lenoir, in the eastboound lanes of Wilkesboro Boulevard.
Hartley said the investigation reveals that Prestwood failed to yield the right of way to Ormand, who had merged on to Wilkesboro Boulevard from U.S. 321.
Hartley said the impact of the collision ejected Ormand from the motorcycle, and she was pronounced dead at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
Prestwood was transported by Caldwell County EMS to Caldwell Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

what in this world is going on in Lenoir and Granite Falls these days? there is crash after crash and there have been so many fatalities its alarming! i have lived in Lenoir and in Granite Falls my entire life and theres not one road in either place i havent traveled. ive never seen so many tradgedies in my life. my heart and prayers go out to all these innocent families that have lost loved ones. its one thing to have an accident- didnt see them, etc. but for the most part the ones to blame for these tradgedies are drunk/impaired drivers. WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR JUDGES??!! these people are charged and arrested and the judges let them go with probation!! GET REAL!! like the school teacher that hit and run and the drunk woman that killed that 38 year old man in Granite Falls a few weeks ago. the families of the deceased should push to the limit and then some to see these people are where they belong! BEHIND BARS! if they would contact their D.A. and the judges- if they can contact the judges-and really raise cane maybe the jails would be fuller and our roads safer. we should all do that because one day it may be one of us or one of our loved ones that is hit and killed by an imapired driver. come on people! lets speak out for our own safety and that of our families and friends.

If the woman on the motorcycle BLOWED THROUGH the yield without stopping or YIELDING to oncoming traffic then NO there should be no charges. IF the woman on the motorcycle BROKE THE LAW by failing to yield and Prestwood was already in motion of turning then it was Motorcycle lady's fault. I have been making that same turn for many years and I couldn't count the times that I was almost hit head-on or t-boned because some idiot DID NOT YIELD coming off of hwy 321. End of discussion!!!

I can definately see why this Prestwood woman should be charged with death by vehicle and failure to yield right of way. It doesn't matter if some people see millions people not obeying the traffic laws, they are still the traffic laws. Another publication wrote that the maximum penality she could receive is losing her drivers license for two years and three years probation. That penality is ridiculous. She KILLED an innocent human. She should have been charged with a felony, such as vehicular homicide. Being who she is and where she lives Prestwood will most likely get off with no punishment other having to live with the fact that she took an innocent persons life.

Not too sure how Prestwood can be found at fault or worse, charged with anything. When turning left into that shopping center from the direction she was, I HAVE NEVER seen anyone OBSERVE the YIELD sign there when coming off 321. Everyone blows through it and I see motorcycles doing it all the time.
