Monday marked the beginning of the holiday season in Granite Falls as thousands of people filled the downtown square for a night of music and cheers.

Musicians from community schools and area churches joined in song as Granite Falls Mayor Barry Hayes and the town council officially lit the three trees on the square and the surrounding decorations. Children young and old stood in awe as snow fell from the sky, and many families enjoyed quality time with one another.

“I come out every year to meet new people and to hear the different Christmas carols,” said Susan Miller, whose grandson performed in the Granite Falls Middle School chorus. “It is a great event every year, and I think it just makes everyone feel good inside.”

The evening celebration included music from the band and chorus programs at each of the town’s schools. It also highlighted the community choir, which led the crowd in a festival of carols. Vendors lined the streets, filling everyone’s bellies with delight, and local churches shared messages of love and hope to all who walked by.

“This is such a special night for this town and our community,” Hayes said. “Our community comes together to bring this event to life, and our staff does a wonderful job providing support. It always amazes me to see how this event grows every year, not only in the number of people who attend, but also the number of churches and community businesses who get involved. I want to personally thank all who attended, including our many performers.”

Now in its fourth year, Festival on the Square has become a tradition in Granite Falls and the county. Families from all over Caldwell County come to partake in the event, saying that they leave every year filled with the Christmas spirit. They said they enjoy a night of fellowship and seeing old friends. Hayes also noted that he thinks that festivals like this add character to a particular community.

“The southern end of Caldwell County is out here tonight enjoying a delightful evening, and I think it is a great opportunity for people to visit our downtown area,” Hayes said. “We are just delighted to see so many families getting involved, and we truly hope that everyone enjoys a wonderful Christmas season.”
