In an attempt to bring attention to the artistry and craftsmanship of local potters, the Town of Hudson will host the inaugural Foothills Pottery Festival at the end of the month.

The festival is slated to take place Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Hudson Uptown Building from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Bill Warren, who is organizing the event along with his wife Angie, said the festival is designed to highlight the works of potters in and around Caldwell County.

"My wife and I enjoy looking at (pottery), and we have a few pieces," Warren explained. "We've got dozens and dozens of good potters here in the county, and we wanted to give them an outlet, a showcase if you will, to display their works."

Warren said about two dozen vendors have registered to display and demonstrate their works so far and added that applications will be taken for another couple of weeks as organizers try to get at least 40 vendors involved with the festival.

While potters will be able to display and sell their wares, Warren said another draw should be the demonstrations given that show how they make their pottery. He said those planning to display also have been asked to bring equipment and demonstrate their techniques.

"We want them to show off their works but also show how they make them," Warren said.

Sybil Hedspeth and John Saunders are but two of the local potters who will take part in the festival, and both have assisted with the organization of the event.

Warren said the goal is to turn the inaugural festival into an annual event, making it something people will associate with the Town of Hudson, much like they do the Butterfly Festival hosted by the town each May.

"We're hoping this turns into an annual event, one that Hudson can be known for," he said.

In addition to the pottery vendors taking part, Warren said food vendors will be available as well to provide food and drink throughout the event.

Admission to the festival is free.

"We wanted to make it accessible to everyone," Warren said.

Booth rental for the event inside the HUB, located at 145 Cedar Valley Road, Hudson, will be $75 for a 12- by 12-foot space.

Anyone wanting more information or space rental can contact Warren Monday-Friday from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at 828-726-1009.

I think this business has a potential in the international market. We have just to empower this potential and use it to progress.
