Spartans open swim season

Amanda Bolick picked up a pair of wins and Rachel Ponti added a win as South Caldwell finished third in girls swimming Tuesday afternoon in a tri-team meet at Lenoir Aquatic Center.
Bolick scored wins in the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly events while Ponti won the 100-yard freestyle race.
Emily Benfield finished second in the 200 freestyle and Ponti finsihed third in the 200 individual medley for the final podium finish for South.
The Spartans also won the 200 freestyle relay.
Watauga won the meet with 106 points and Ashbrook was second with 71 points. The Spartans finished with 68 points.
In the boys meet, South finished second to Watauga 112-93.
Johnny Lok led the Spartans with wins in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley and Devin Abernathy picked up the other win for South in the 100 butterfly.
Michal Santos finished second in the 50 and 100 freestyle events Nathan Deihl and Carson Shields collected podium finishes for the Spartans.
South also won the 400 relay.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING South Caldwell 55 South Point 23
South Caldwell won its first eight matches and cruised to a 55-23 win over South Point in high school wrestling Tuesday night in Sawmills.
Michale Chapman got the match started with s pin over Matthew Connett in the 152-pound match to give the Spartans an early 6-0 lead.
David Crouch, Devin Potter and Charlie Volz followed with wins by forfeit before Grant Benham pinned Trent Boulard at 1:10 to give the Spartans a 30-0 lead.
Other winners by forfeit for South Caldwell (6-4) included Luis Velasco and Chancie Cannon.
At 112, Cory Taber won a 9-7 decision over Hunter Dunn to make it 45-0 South Caldwell.
At 119, Jimmy Paxton pickd up the first win of the night for South Point pinning Ryan Oxford at 1:58.
South Point won the next three matches before Seth Byland got the Spartans back on a winning streak with a 12-4 decision over Eric McIntyre at 140.
Cody Watson closed out the match at 145 with a pin over South Point's Nate Cook at 59 seconds.
"I was pleased with how well our team responded tonight," South Caldwell head wrestling coach Billy Miller said. "Seth is a silent leader on this team and he did a good job of stopping their winning streak."

VARSITY BOYS BASKETBALL East Burke 73 South Caldwell 66
South Caldwell's comeback effort fell just short as the Spartans lost to East Burke 73-66 in Icard Tuesday night.
The Spartans trailed 43-28 at halftime before outscoring the Cavaliers 36-22 in the second half to pull to within a point at 65-64 with 1:56 to go in the game.
East Burke (1-0) rebounded after a time out and outscored the Spartans 8-2 the rest of the game to pull away for the win.
"I was pleased with how we came back and fought in the second half," South head boys coach Lee Swanson said.
South (0-3) was led by center Matt Volz with 18 and Jonathan Cox added 12 for the Spartans.
Nick Austin was the only other player to finish in double figures with 10 for South. Juston Lail led East Burke with 24 and Jeese Huff scored 15 for the Cavalliers.
VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL South Caldwell 69 East Burke 60
South Caldwell trailed at halftime for the first time all season before using a second-half comeback to get a 69-60 win in Icard Tuesday night in non-conference action.
South (3-0) trailed 36-25 at halftime and needed a spark in the seocnd half to overcome the deficit and that is when senior Kayla Gross answered the call from Spartans head coach Jeff Parham.
Gross scored all of her game-high 18 points in the second half and held Cavaliers all-conference player Alicia Byrd to just five points in the second half on defense.
"She really stepped up and showed a lot of senior leadership tonight for our team," Parham said. "I thought we came out and fought hard in the second half against a good East Burke team."
Shaina Sams and Matison Hall each added 15 points for South with Brooklyn Boston also finishing in double figures for the Spartans with 10 points.
Emily Greene led East Burke (0-1) with 17 points and Byrd scored 15.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL South Caldwell 40, East Burke 20
South Caldwell jumped out to an early lead and never looked back against East Burke.
Heather Griffin led the Spartans with 11 points and Amber Gross added nine for South.
BOYS BASKETBALL Heritage Christian 87 Miller's Creek 33
Heirtage Christian led 52-11 at halftime and was never seriously challneged at home Tuesday afternoon in the conference win over Miller's Creek.
Mitchell Prestwood led the Eagles with 30 points and Cameron Kirkman scored 20 for Heritage Christian. Stephen Hutchinson led Miller's Creek with 10 points.
GIRLS BASKETBALL Heritage Christian 43 Miller's Creek 35
Amber Hodge led Heritage Christian with 27 points and Makayla Morgan added 11 as Heritage scored a 43-35 win over Miller's Creek Tuesday afternoon in Hudson.
Chandler Parsons and Amber Brock led Miller's Creek with 10 points each.

Granite Falls lost to West Alexander 54-39 in middle school wrestling Monday in Granite Falls.
