Richard Wheeler

Richard Commie Wheeler, 65, of Oakwood Road, Taylorsville, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville.

He was born Aug. 19, 1944, in Providence, R.I., to the late Commie Dore Wheeler and Anne Danielian Wheeler. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran and was a mail carrier.

Survivors include a sister, Janet Wheeler of Bethlehem; three brothers, Robert Wheeler, Gregory Wheeler and Daniel Wheeler, all of Bethlehem; one niece and nephew; and a close friend, Shawna Dosworth of Bethlehem.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Blue Ridge Memorial Park by the Rev. Bill Smith. Military honors will be provided by D.A.V. Chapter 84.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Adams Funeral Home.

Betty Taylor

Mrs. Betty Sue Taylor, 68, of Lenoir, died Monday Dec. 21, 2009 ,at Grace Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Taylor was born Sept. 16, 1941, in Burke County to the late Clarence and Frances Moses Wilson. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by a sister.

Surviving is her husband, Dennis Taylor of the home.

Funeral services for Betty Sue Taylor will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday Dec. 23, 2009, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with the Rev. Gary Shew officiating.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Blue Ridge Cemetery, Lenoir.

The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.

Scott Sumpter

Mr. Scott Brady Sumpter, 38, of Connelly Springs, died Monday at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley. The memorial service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at Mackie-High Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Marion Poythress officiating. Burial will be private. Mackie-High Funeral Home is serving the family.

James Story Sr.

James “Marshall” Story Sr., 81, of Lenoir, passed away Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Story was born in Caldwell County to the late Fred Marshall Story and Sally Etta Sherrill Story. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Daniel Story. He was retired from Singer Furniture.

Survivors include his wife, Glendora Gentry Story of the home; his sons, James M. Story Jr. and his wife Jan of Newport News, Va., and Jerry G. Story and his wife Alyce of Lenoir; six grandchildren, Jennifer Story Woods and husband Rick of Lenoir, Jeremy Story and wife Allie of Lenoir, Courtney Story Coffman and husband Timm of Newport News, Va., Christopher Story of Newport News, Va., Emily Mikeal and husband Jason of Lenoir, Katy Dunn and husband Russell of Lenoir; eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held in Pendry’s Chapel Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Leon Morrow officiating. Burial will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at Pendry’s Funeral Home prior to the service Wednesday from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m.

Serving as pallbearers will be Rick Woods, Jeremy Story, Russell Dunn and Jason Mikeal.
