Wreck shuts down Connelly Springs Road
The crash happened at 8:18 p.m. when a 1998 Buick passenger vehicle driven by David Taylor, 59, turned in front or a 1997 Ford passenger vehicle driven by 19-year-old Gage Hoke.
According to Trooper R.A. Annas of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Taylor was traveling north and attempted to turn on to Conway Drive with Hoke's vehicle approaching southbound less than 20 yards away. Annas said Caldwell County EMS personnel told him Taylor's blood sugar level was very low, and he was unresponsive when they arrived at the scene.
The impact of the crash from the passenger's side of the Buick to the driver's side of the Ford pinned Hoke inside his vehicle. Working in a heavy rain, crews for North Catawba Fire and Rescue were able to extricate Hoke from the vehicle.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
Hoke was transported by EMS to Caldwell Memorial Hospital with head and leg injuries. He was treated and reported to be in stable condition.
Taylor was taken to Valdese Hospital by EMS. Annas said he spoke with Taylor later Tuesday night, and he was alert.
No charges have been filed at this time, though the crash remains under investigation by the NCHP. Annas said it does not appear that drugs, alcohol, speed or the weather conditions played a role in the collision.
Connelly Springs Road was closed to traffic in both directions for more than an hour as rescue personnel tended to the patients and for the vehicles and debris to be removed from the roadway.
