CCC&TI Cobras advance to semifinals

With tough defense and long-range shooting, the Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute Cobras Men’s Basketball team beat a tough opponent in the first game of the NJCAA Division III National Championships Thursday in Loch Sheldrake, N.Y.

CCC&TI (28-6) defeated Herkimer County (N.Y.) Community College (26-8) 82-65 Wednesday afternoon behind a strong performance by freshman Lawrence Jackson, who had 30 points, including 5 of 10 from 3-point range, and 12 rebounds. Also scoring in double figures were sophomore TJ Wilson (14 points, 10 rebounds), freshman Justin Parham (12 points) and sophomore Robert Harvey (10 points).

With the win, the Cobras advance to the semifinals of the tournament, being held on the campus of SUNY-Sullivan, for a rematch against Eastfield College (Mesquite, Texas) at 5 p.m. Friday. In the quarterfinal game at the 2013 NJCAA Division III National Championship, Eastfield defeated CCC&TI 101-98 in overtime. CCC&TI won its next two games to finish fourth in the tournament and Eastfield took second place.

The winner of Friday’s matchup will advance to the NJCAA Division III National Championship Finals, which will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday.
