Caldwell County preps roundup

South Caldwell pitcher Austin Miller threw a complete game and limited Hickory to four hits as South Caldwell won 6-0.

Two of the four hits came in the first inning, and only one runner advanced past first in the final five innings. Miller had six strikeouts and no walks.

South Caldwell broke a scoreless game in the second. With one out, Taylor Purus doubled, then he scored on a single by Philip Page to make the score 1-0.

South Caldwell scored one more run in the fourth, then broke the game open with four runs off three hits in the fifth inning, all four coming when there were two outs. Two of the three hits in the fifth inning were for extra bases: Miller hit a run-scoring double, and Ethan James had a two-run home run to complete the scoring.

The South Caldwell softball team cruised to a 12-2 win in five innings Friday in Hickory.

Madison Bumgarner was the winning pitcher and also hit a grand slam home run. Rebecca Kale went 3-4, and Lainey Triplett went 3-4 with a triple.

Ten of the team’s 12 runs were earned.

The Hibriten Panthers lost Friday’s home game against Foard, 6-4. No details about the game had been called in by late Friday night.


Erika Troutman scored four goals for Hickory, and Lauren Skoog scored the other. Molly Gniadek, Cameron Blake, Marie Drewno, Katie Herfurth and Caitlynn Myer were credited with assists.
