Patton stifles South
The South Caldwell baseball team suffered yet another non-conference loss after dropping a 2-0 decision to Patton on Saturday in Sawmills.
While the Spartans are 7-4 overall, they are just 1-3 outside of the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference. Meanwhile, Patton improves to 7-5 overall.
South scattered seven hits throughout the game, but never saw a base runner reach third base. In the third inning, the Spartans led off with back-to-back singles by Ethan James and Phillip Page. However, James was picked off at second by catcher Luke Baker. In the fifth inning, South had runners on first and second, but a double play ended the inning.
“We didn’t have many opportunities, and when we did, we couldn’t get a timely hit,” said South head coach Jeff Parham. “We have to find ways to get sharper and get better. We need some people to step up.”
The Panthers scored both of their runs in the top of the seventh inning. Grayson Moses reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by pinch-hitter Logan Pearson. Pearson advanced to third on the throw to home plate. Trenton Toddy then followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Pearson.
Patton starting pitcher Peyton Mull made his first ever varsity appearance on Saturday. The freshman threw six shutout innings, surrendering just seven hits, while striking out six. Brock Toner picked up the save, allowing no hits and striking out three in one inning of work.
South Caldwell’s Gage Parham also pitched well. He threw all seven innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits, while striking out six.
“We had another good pitching performance,” Jeff Parham said. “We have to be able to score some runs.”
The Spartans will play in the East Rutherford Easter Tournament starting on Monday. They will play Chase at 5 p.m. at McNair Field in Forest City.
In the junior varsity game, South Caldwell defeated Patton 14-1 in four innings.
Tanner Parham picked up the win for South. He threw all four innings, allowing just the one run. Brett Macchia led the Spartans with two hits and two RBIs, while Chase Whisnant had one hit and two RBIs. Blake Herman and Cameron Wright each contributed with one hit in the win.
