Caldwell fends off Mint Hill

Caldwell County Post 29 withstood a late Mint Hill rally to claim a 14-10 victory and take a 2-1 series lead in the first round of the Area IV playoffs on Friday night in Mint Hill.
The 29ers seized control early in the game, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits to take a 10-0 lead after three innings. Caldwell scored four in the first inning on RBI singles by Brett Macchia and Austin Miller. John Austin hit an RBI sacrifice fly and Tre Harper drew an RBI walk.
Post 29 added three more runs in each of the second and third innings. In the second, Miller and Grayam Austin each hit an RBI double, while John Austin hit an RBI single. Then in the third, Macchia hit an RBI double, while Miller and John Austin each hit RBI singles.
Macchia led Caldwell with five hits in the game, including the double, two RBIs and three runs scored. Miller added four hits, including a double, three RBIs and three runs scored.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Mint Hill broke up Madison Cook's perfect game when Pete Englert hit a solo home run to right field. Post 4059 added a second run in the inning thanks to a Caldwell error to make the score 10-2.
Mint Hill went on to score four runs in the fifth inning and a three-run home run by Spencer Hutchinson in the bottom of sixth cut the Caldwell lead to 10-9.
However, the 29ers responded with four runs in the seventh to extend the lead back to 14-9. A costly error by Mint Hill scored two runs for Caldwell, while a wild pitch and a double steal allowed the other two runs to score. Macchia, Miller, Austin and Austin scored the runs for the 29ers.
Mint Hill added a run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hutchinson hit a two-out triple and scored on an RBI single by Englert. However, Post 4059 would get no closer.
Cook picked up the win for Caldwell. He threw the first five innings and allowed seven runs on just five hits, while striking out five. Chase Shuford took the loss for Mint Hill. He pitched to just the first three batters before leaving the game with an injury. However, all three batters came in to score.
