29ers fall to Shelby
A variety of defensive miscues cost Caldwell County a chance to steal a game at Shelby Post 82 as Post 29 dropped a 10-6 decision in the second round of the Area IV playoffs on Tuesday night.
“You just can’t make mistakes like that when you play a good team like Shelby,” said Caldwell head coach Myron Day. “We continued to hit the ball well, but you have to play good defense. We’ll be back in front of our fans tomorrow night (Wednesday) and hopefully we can play better and even this series.”
Post 29 scored one run in each of the first three innings to open up an early 3-1 lead over Shelby. With two outs in the bottom of the first, Dylan Hamel sent the first pitch he saw deep over the left center wall for a home run. Then in the second, John Austin hit a one-out single and later scored on an RBI single by Tre Harper. Hamel hit a two-out double in the top of the third inning and Brett Macchia followed with an RBI single to left to put Caldwell ahead 3-1.
Shelby scored the next X runs of the game, including three in the bottom of the third. Jay Seagle hit an RBI double and Bradley Evans hit an RBI sacrifice fly. A Caldwell error allowed another run to score to give Shelby the lead for good.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Shelby broke the game wide open with six runs. Caleb Burnham led off with a solo home run to increase the lead to 5-3. Post 82 scored the other five runs thanks to Caldwell errors to take a commanding 10-3 lead.
The 29ers started a rally in the top of the seventh. Taylor Purus and Grayam Austin led off with back-to-back singles. Hamel followed with his second home run of the day, this one was a three-run shot to left center to cut the deficit to 10-6.
However, Caldwell would get no closer.
Shelby holds a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series. Game two will be tonight at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls. The first pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
