Caldwell County Post 29 head coach Brandon Banks earned career win number 50 as the 29ers claimed an 11-1 decision in seven innings over Henderson County Post 423 in the season-opener on Sunday in Granite Falls.

“I give credit to all the players over the past few seasons, as well as all of my assistant coaches,” Banks said. “Without the players and coaches, none of it would be possible.”

Not only was Sunday’s game the season-opener, it was also the first conference game of the season. The 29ers scored the 11 runs on 10 hits, while committing just one error in the field.

“We started off the conference right with a big win,” Banks said. “It was a good, overall team effort. Everyone on the team contributed, which is always good.”

Post 29 got on the board with two runs in the first inning. Nick Horning and Austin Miller each walked and stole bases before Horning scored on a wild pitch. John Austin followed with an RBI infield single to score Miller.

The 29ers added another three runs in the second inning. Colton Henthorne scored on a double-steal. During the play, Austin Miller found himself standing on second as Henderson attempted to throw out Henthorne at home. Miller later scored on a throwing error by Henderson as he was stealing second. AJ Watson also scored in the inning. He walked, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a dropped third strike to give Caldwell a 5-0 advantage.

Post 29 added one run in each the third and fourth innings. Henthorne hit an RBI single to score Trevor Beane in the third, while Austin scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.

Starting pitcher Drew Bolick had a phenomenal outing. He threw six, shutout innings, while surrendering just two hits and striking out 12.

“Drew was at the top of his game today (Sunday),” said Banks. “He did exactly what we expected him to do. He went out there and looked like a veteran. His fastball had some pop and his curveball was outstanding.”

Caldwell added two insurance runs in the sixth inning and another two to end the game in the seventh. In the sixth inning, Watson doubled and scored on an RBI single by Michael Davis. Davis was then caught stealing. Later in the inning, Phillip Page singled and scored on an error. Madison Cook reached first on the same error.

Henderson scored its only run in the top of the seventh. Tucker Epperson hit an RBI double to score Zane Adkins. In the bottom of the seventh, Miller hit an RBI single to score Aaron Moore and Davis hit a sacrifice fly to score Miller to end the game.

Post 29 returns to action on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game against Lincoln County at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls. The alumni game will now be on Thursday at 7 p.m.
