Caldwell falls to Mint Hill in game one
Caldwell County pitchers combined to walk 11 Mint Hill batters and hit another two, resulting in a 7-3 loss in game one of the first round of the Area IV playoffs on Tuesday in Mint Hill.
With the win, Mint Hill takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series.
“I thought we outplayed them and outhit them,” said Caldwell head coach Myron Day. “But you can’t expect to win a game when you walk that many batters. There’s no love lost between these two teams. It’s going to be an interesting series.”
In the bottom of the second inning, Mint Hill sent 12 batters to the plate and scored six runs. With two runners on and two outs, Taylor Crowell hit a two-run single to right to give Mint Hill a 2-0 lead. The next six batters for Mint Hill all walked and produced three runs. Triston Glover, James Hickes and Hunter Davis all drew RBI walks. The sixth run was scored on a wild pitch.
Post 29 cut the deficit to 6-2 in the top of the seventh. Mason Biddix and Tre Harper hit back-to-back one-out doubles to put the 29ers on the board. Two batters later, Trent Wakefield knocked in Harper with an RBI single to left.
Mint Hill added another run in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a Caldwell error. Glover scored the run to make it a 7-2 game.
Caldwell got one run back in the ninth. Biddix led off with a walk and Harper followed with a single. Two batters later, Wakefield hit a sacrifice fly to score Biddix and make the score 7-3. However, Post 29 would get no closer.
Hickes earned the win on the mound for Mint Hill and Austin Miller suffered the loss for Caldwell.
The two teams will meet again tonight for game two of the series. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. at M.S. Deal Stadium in Granite Falls.
