Warriors cruise past Bunker Hill

The West Caldwell boy’s basketball team jumped out to a 14-2 lead in the first quarter en route to a 47-34 victory over Bunker Hill on Friday in Gamewell.
The Warriors opened the game on a 9-0 run, including a slam-dunk by Mekhi Dula. Bunker Hill did not score its first points until there was 2:52 left in the quarter. A basket by J’len Wilson would be the only points scored by the Bears in the quarter.
In the second quarter, West opened with a 9-2 run, including a 3-pointer by Deshawn Patterson. Bunker Hill followed with a 6-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to 23-10. West led 25-10 at the half. Wilson scored six of the Bears’ 10 points in the half.
The Bears came out in the third quarter looking to comeback and had cut the West lead down to nine. However, the Warriors went on a run to close the quarter, including a triple at the buzzer by Patterson. West opened up a 38-22 advantage after three quarters. Patterson hit three 3-pointers on the day and finished with 12 points.
Bunker Hill outscored West in the fourth, but the Warriors were able to run the clock out and claim the victory.
Dula was the leading scorer for West with 16 points. Ashton Smith added eight in the victory.
Wilson scored 21 of the Bears’ 34 points to lead Bunker Hill.
West Caldwell will host Draughn on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

In the girl’s game, West Caldwell fought off a furious Bunker Hill comeback to hang on for a 61-56 win on Friday in Gamewell.
The Warriors used full-court pressure to cause a number of Bunker Hill turnovers. West jumped out to a commanding 24-9 lead in the quarter. Brittany Dixon hit two 3-pointers and a 2-point basket for eight points, while Daryan Dixon-Dula added seven in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Dixon-Dula scored another 10 points and Dixon hit another triple. Meanwhile, Montana Lineberger scored nine points for the Bears. The Warriors held a 39-29 lead at the half.
The Bears cut the lead to just two by the end of the third. They outscored West 14-6 in the quarter. Anna Williams scored five for Bunker Hill and Brittany Travis hit a three.
Dixon hit another triple for the Warriors and finished the final stanza with five points. Lexus Corpening added five in the quarter to help keep West in the lead. The Warriors outscored the Bears 16-13 in the quarter to hang on for the win.
Dixon-Dula scored a game-high 21 points to lead West. Dixon added 17 points and Corpening scored 16.
Lineberger led Bunker Hill with 12 points and Tyra Mitchell scored 11.
West Caldwell returns to action with a game against Draughn on Tuesday in Gamewell. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
