Draughn slips by South

The South Caldwell baseball team surrendered three unearned runs, resulting in a 5-2 loss to Draughn on Saturday in Sawmills.

The Spartans had multiple opportunities to capitalize, but could not get a timely hit at the plate. In the fifth inning, South had runners on second and third with one out and did not score. Then in the sixth, the Spartans had bases loaded with no outs, but a strikeout and a double play ended the inning with no runs across the plate.

"You have to come to play this game every day," said South head coach Jeff Parham. You have to be focused and ready, and when opportunities arise, you have to make it happen."

South Caldwell took an early 1-0 lead after Gage Parham reached on an error and later scored on a groundout by Austin Miller. Draughn matched in the top of the second. Devon Poteat led off with a single and scored on an RBI, infield single by Ray Pierce.

The Wildcats added another three runs in the top of the third. John Austin hit a single to right field to score Grant Street. The Spartans attempted to throw out Austin at first, but an errant throw allowed Taylor Powell to score Austin to advance all the way to third. Two batters later, Poteat hit an RBI single to give Draughn a 4-1 advantage.

South got one run back in the bottom of the third. Nick Shields reached on an error, before Nick Horning hit an RBI double, allowing courtesy runner Jon Almond to score from first.

Draughn added an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Street singled and later score on an RBI double by Mason Biddix to make the score 5-2. The Spartans got runners on first and second in the bottom of he inning, but a groundout to third ended the game.

The Spartans will return to action on Tuesday with a home game against Hickory. The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
