South shuts out West
The South Caldwell tennis team claimed a 9-0 victory over West Caldwell on Thursday in Gamewell.
“I’ve felt like we’ve struggled in the early matches,” South head coach Will Rudicil said. “We need to start playing more consistently and cut down on unforced errors. But, we’ve gotten better each week and we need to continue to get better.”
In singles play, South Caldwell’s Will Benfield won the number one match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Billy Dziesinski. In the number two match, Adam Lund defeated West Caldwell’s Jonathan Raby 6-1, 6-0. Kevin Lane earned a victory for the Spartans in the number three spot. He defeated Brandon Crisp 6-2, 6-2. In the number four match, South Caldwell’s Andrew Reeves took down Kobie Goldsberry 6-1, 6-0. Tanner Dellinger knocked off West Caldwell’s Alex Ibarra with a 6-2, 6-3 victory. In the final singles match, South Caldwell’s Clay Graves claimed a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Shin Miyazaki.
In doubles play, Benfield teamed up with Lund to claim an 8-4 victory over Dziesinski and Crisp in the number one match. At number two, Lane and Reeves won an 8-4 decision over Raby and Goldsberry. In the third and final doubles match, Dellinger and Graves defeated Ibarra and Bryan Escobar by a score of 8-0.
South Caldwell will next play host to Alexander Central on Tuesday. West Caldwell will travel to Hibriten on Monday.
